Redlands Women’s Soccer Defeats Cal Lutheran, Raises Breast Cancer Awareness

On the inaugural “Breast Cancer Awareness Night,” the University of Redlands women’s soccer team handed Cal Lutheran University its most lopsided setback of the year, winning, 3-0, on Saturday night in Redlands.

Prior to the start of the match, the Omer E. Robbins Chaplain to the University, the Rev. John Walsh presented a moment of silence in honor of those who have fought against breast cancer. In addition, all fans in attendance were offered a pink ribbon upon entry into the Farquhar Field complex.

The night belonged to the Maroon and Gray, as the more than 450 spectators present were treated to a match that Redlands controlled from the outset.

Freshman midfielder Kendall Pegan (Lafayette, CA) netted the first goal of her Redlands career in the 16th minute after sophomore midfielder Maddy Phillips (Seattle, WA) laced a perfect through ball past traffic in the box.

At the 35-minute mark, junior midfielder Jessi Hoyt (Boise, ID) extended the lead after the Regals tried to clear the ball out of the box. Hoyt halted the clearance attempt and fired a shot to the right-hand side of the net to put the Bulldogs on top, 2-0, heading into the intermission.

Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Hoyt struck again, this time converting on a pass from the left wing off of the feet of sophomore forward Fionna Connolly (Salem, OR).

Senior goalkeeper Tenley Rawlings (Salt Lake City, UT) played 85:26 in between the pipes for the Maroon and Gray and notched her 10th victory of the season, making two saves. Freshman goalkeeper Linzey Smith (Anaheim Hills, CA) combined with Rawlings for the shutout, playing 4:34 while stopping one shot.

Kristin Borzi guarded the Regal net for the full 90 minutes and turned away five scoring attempts.

Redlands held the upper hand in shots, 20-14, but the visitors boasted a 3-2 edge in corner-kick opportunities.

The Bulldogs have now won 10 of their past 12 contests, and all but two of those victories resulted in a shutout.

Cal Lutheran (11-4-2, 5-4-1 SCIAC) travels to Orange on Monday for a make-up match against Chapman University. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

Redlands (10-5, 8-2 SCIAC) has a firm grasp of the second-place spot in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings, trailing only Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. The Bulldogs take to the road on Wednesday to contest the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges at 4 p.m. When the teams met on Oct. 3, Redlands pulled out a 1-0 victory.
