Redlands Men's Track and Field posts 18 top-three finishes and beats Caltech and Cal Lutheran at SCIAC No. 1

PASADENA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Track and Field teams opened their 2023 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) schedule at the SCIAC Multi Dual hosted by Caltech. They went 2-1 in head-to-head match-ups with Caltech, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS), and Cal Lutheran University (CLU).

The Bulldogs defeated Caltech 139-23 and Cal Lutheran 122-41. The lone defeat coming against Claremont-M-S, 112-51. They had two event wins and 18 top-three finishes on the day.

The event wins came courtesy of Jacob Huset (Tacoma, WA) who won the high jump with a mark of 1.85m/6' 0.75" and the Long Jump at 6.54m/21' 5.5". Huset finished in a tie for first in the High Jump with Owen Schmitz (Fremont, CA) who posted the same mark, but it took him more attempts, so Huset got the top spot.

Other top-three finishes for Huset came in the 110m Hurdles where he ran a personal best time of 16.68 and finished in third, he was a member of the runner-up 4x400 relay team, and lastly took second in the javelin with another personal best of 44.39m/145' 8".

For Schmitz, he also finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 13.16m/43' 2.25".

Markelle Raymond (Fresno, CA) had three runner-up finishes, taking second in the 100m (10.90), 4x100 (41.85), and 4x400 (3:25.28). This was Raymond's first outdoor meet of the season after competing at Northern Arizona University's (NAU) two indoor meets in February.

Adding to the Bulldogs' sprint success and relay success was Cristian Megas (Palmdale, CA) who was the runner-up in the 200m (22.23) and helped the 4x100 relay team take second as well.

In the middle-distance events Ronan Byrne (Portola Valley, CA) took second in the 800m (1:56.59) and was a member of the 4x400 relay. Riley Lathrop (Honolulu, HI) was the other top scorer in the middle distance races, taking third in the 1500m with a sub-4 minute time of 3:57.65.

Huset came in third in the 110m Hurdles and the runner who finished right in front of him was Gael Orozco (Claremont, CA) who ran a 16:54.

Nathan Mestre (Chula Vista, CA) added a third Bulldog to the list of podium finishers in the hurdle events, taking third in the 400m Hurdles with a time of 1:00.52.

Looking deeper at the two runner-up relay teams, head coach Mike Schmidt put Jamir Jones (Fairfield, CA), Cooper Malerstein (Huntington Beach, CA), Megas, and Raymond on his 4x100 team that ran a 41.85 and then put Raymond, Byrne, Huset, and Jones on the 4x400 team that finished in 3:25.28.

Sophomore Corte Peterson (Lafayette, CO) had a personal best mark of 4.40m/14' 5.25" in the pole vault to take third place.

Cameron Kisob (Burbank, CA) was third in the Long Jump with a mark of 6.28m/20' 7.25". Allyn Asberry-Blanco (Orange County, N.Y.) made it six top-three finishes in the jumping events as he took second in the Triple Jump thanks to a second jump of 13.22m/43' 4.5".

Lastly, representing the throwers in the top-three was Tyler Davies (Lake Forest, CA) who was third in the hammer with a mark of 39.92m/131'. His new personal best mark came on his first attempt of the competition.

For Huset, he will travel to the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships in Birmingham, Alabama for the first time in his career this coming Friday and Saturday, March 10-11 as he competes in the High Jump.

The rest of the Bulldogs will either get the weekend off or head to the Oxy Distance Carnival this Saturday, March 11. Their next full meet is the Redlands Invitational inside Ted Runner Stadium on Friday, March 17 at 3:30 p.m.
