Redlands Women’s Swimming Wins UPS Logger Invite; Meet Records Fall

TACOMA, Wash. - The University of Redlands Women's Swimming & Diving team put together an amazing weekend winning the three-day UPS Logger Invite, posting a score of 724 points.  

This total was good enough to beat out the field that included Pacific Lutheran (2nd – 682), Whitworth University (3rd – 662), Uni. of Puget Sound (4th – 661), Whitman College (5th – 636), Southwestern Oregon CC (6th – 526), College of Idaho (7th – 171), and Soka University (8th – 82).   

Day 1

The Maroon and Grey got off to a quick start bringing home 106 points on the first day sparked by the 200 Medley Relay Team of Sydney Nakagawa (Vancouver, WA), Hanna Parker (Seattle, WA), Madison Petschauer (Cary, NC), and Jacqueline Setlich (Laguna Niguel, CA) who won the event with a time of 1:47.25 giving UR 40 points.  The 'B' team wasn't too far behind in 9th (1:53.64) adding another 18 points with a team composed of Abby Springer (Paso Robles, CA), Madison Southmayd, Makenna Parenti (Rocklin, CA), and Ashleigh Merrill (Anacortes, WA)

The evening ended with the 800 Free Relay and the team of Gaby Hayon (Agoura Hills, CA), Petschauer, Setlich, and Nakagawa paced the Bulldogs finishing 6th with a time of 8:03.52 giving UR another 26 points.  The 'B' team of Southmayd, Andrea Brenstrom (Shrewsbury, MA), Emily Heaston (Corona, CA), and Merrill tacked on another 22 points after taking 8th with a time of 8:20.93.             

Day 2

It was a big second day for the University of Redlands adding another 339 points to their total as they maintained their advantage over the field.  Setlich, Nakagawa, Parenti, and Southmayd composed the 200 Free Relay team that finished 4th with a 1:39.87.  The 'B' team of Lauren Kline (Parker, CO), Emma Jones (Atlanta, GA), Heaston, and Merrill placed as well taking 13th with a time of 1:47.28.

The first individual event was the 200 Fly with Parenti, Sarah Szafranski (Houston, TX), and Verenice Tapia (Napa, CA) taking 7th (2:19.34), 9th (2:16.22), and 15th (2:34.54), respectively.  The momentum carried over into the 50 Back where Nakagawa came up with a huge 1st place finish with a time of 27.48.  Springer followed in 5th (28.59), Kline in 10th (29.56), and Hayon in 13th (30.38).  Southmayd returned in her first individual race, the 200 Breast and finished 5th with a 2:31.07, two seconds faster than her prelim time.  Parker followed in 9th (2:35.87), and Felix in 10th (2:37.34). 

Then came the 50 Fly and this is where the records fell with Petschauer winning the event with an impressive 25.47, which set the new Meet Record.  Parenti wasn't far off in 8th (27.86), while Merrill took 15th (28.50). 

Nakagawa returned in the 200 Back to place 6th with a 2:13.21 with Kline (12th – 2:14.85) and Springer (14th – 2:16.55) following with strong finishes.  In the very next event, the 50 Breast the second Meet Record fell this time from Parker who won the race with a 30.49, followed by Felix who posted a 33.17 to finish 9th.  Setlich was the lone Bulldog to place in the 100 Free going 12th with a 55.87.  Petschauer returned for the 200 IM and continued with her dominating performances taking 2nd with a 2:09.95, two second faster than her prelim.  Southmayd picked up more points for UR taking 8th with a 2:24.26, while Kline and Szafranski finished 13th (2:22.25) and 15th (2:25.56), respectively. 

Brenstrom and Hayon paced the distance going 6th-7th in the 500 Free posting marks of 5:25.02 and 5:27.41.  Then to wrap up the day, the 'A' team in the 400 Medley Relay of Nakagawa, Parker, Petschauer, and Setlich would take the podium in 3rd with a time of 4:02.39.  The 'B' team of Springer, Southmayd, Parenti, and Merrill added points to the total as well placing 7th with a 4:11.67.   

Day 3

The Bulldogs were able to hold their lead on the final day putting up another 279 points.  The 1650 Free started things off and Brenstrom earned a podium finish taking 3rd with an 18:14.09.  Hayon followed in 9th with an 18:52.56.  Petschauer, Southmayd and Felix put together a trio of strong finishes in the 100 IM with Petschauer taking 2nd with a 1:00.11, while Southmayd and Felix went 9th (1:02.27) and 13th (1:04.94). 

Setlich and Brenstrom were the two Bulldogs in the 200 Free taking 12th (2:02.12) and 14th (2:05.52).  Petschauer then grabbed her second 2nd place finish on the day this time in the 100 Fly with a time of 57.46, again two seconds faster than her prelim time.  She was joined by Parenti (6th – 1:00.32), Springer (7th – 1:00.60), and Szafranski (12th – 1:01.82).

Petschauer and Southmayd impressed going 1st-2nd in the 100 Breast with times of 1:06.76 and 1:07.28.  Parker took 5th with a 1:07.85 and Felix wrapped up the quartet in 13th with a 1:11.81.  Nakagawa returned in one of her top events the 100 Back and she again podiumed finishing 3rd with a 1:00.02, while Kline (8th – 1:02.30), Springer (11th – 1:01.79) and Hayon (16th – 1:04.71) followed.  Nakagawa had a short rest before taking part in the 50 free, where she finished 6th with a 25.34.  Parenti was on her heels taking 8th (25.82) and Setlich followed in 13th (25.71). 

To cap off the three day event the 400 Free Relay created the fireworks with Petschauer, Setlich, Southmayd, and Nakagawa taking 4th with a 3:39.48.  The 'B' team of Merrill, Anna O'Meara (Clovis, CA), Heaston, and Parenti would come in 8th posting a mark of 3:47.43.          

Redlands returns to the pool in the new year for a non-conference match-up with the University of Puget Sound on Saturday, January 8 beginning at 11:00am.
