Redlands Men’s Swimming finishes 5th at UPS Logger Invite

TACOMA, Wash. - The University of Redlands Men's Swimming & Diving team wrapped up the weekend with a solid 5th place finish at the UPS Logger Invite. 

The Bulldogs posted a 521.5, which was good enough to beat Pacific Lutheran University (6th – 245), College of Idaho (7th – 195.5), and Soka University (8TH – 116.5).   

Day 1

The Maroon and Grey got off to a strong start on Day 1 of the three-day event putting up 72 points across the opening two races.  They received 42 points from the two 200 Medley Relay teams.  The 'A' team of Blake Eddow (Corona, CA), Lucas Walker (Mountain View, CA), Drew Heaston (Corona, CA), and Jack Forsythe (Ladera Ranch, CA) took home a 3rd place podium finish with a time of 1:34.89, which gave UR a quick 32 points.  The 'B' team of Memphis Gile (Redlands, CA), Thomas Long (Brea, CA), Chris Loudon (Anchorage, AK), and Scott Shim (Seoul, South Korea) followed in 12th (1:39.53) picking up another 10 points to the total.

In the second event on the evening, the 800 Free Relay, the team of Eddow, Gile, Long, and Walker combined for a 4th place finish (6:59.17) that added another 30 points to the total.         

Day 2

Redlands carried this momentum into Day 2 action picking up another 259 points across 11 events.  Jumpstarting the scoring was the team of Forsythe, Heaston, Gile, and Eddow in the 200 Free Relay finishing 4th (1:26.83).  They also saw their teammates Loudon, Shim, Garrett Long (Brea, CA), and Davis Wingard (Springfield, CA) take 11th (1:32.68).

The first individual event was the 200 Fly where Heaston posted a 1:58.43, two seconds faster than his prelim time that placed him 10th.  Three Bulldogs scored in the 200 Breast led by a 2-3 finish by Walker and T. Long who both tallied times of 2:05.65 and 2:09.47, respectively.  The third finisher was Wingard taking 11th with a 2:14.88. 

Gile, Heaston, and Forsythe returned in the 50 Fly going 12th, 13th, and 16th with times of 24.23, 24.49, and 25.06, respectively.  Wingard and G. Long both competed in the 50 Breast adding more points to the UR total.  Wingard finished 5th (28.02) and G. Long 11th (30.38). 

Eddow continued with his dominance in the 100 Free taking 4th (46.66) ahead of Gile (7th – 48.43), and Forsythe (15th – 49.25).  Walker and T. Long then returned in the 200 IM taking 3rd-4th with times of 1:55.73 and 1:58.24.  Heaston and Wingard added to the total in the same event going 10th (2:02.16) and 16th (2:08.68).  In the distance, Eddow led a trio of Bulldogs taking 2nd with a 4:40.53 dropping over five seconds from his prelim time.  Tom Jansen (Pleasant Hill, CA) was 3rd with a 4:40.85 and Loudon was 11th with a 4:59.99.

The final event on the day was the 400 Medley Relay with the team of Walker, T. Long, Heaston, and Gile taking 7th with a time of 3:34.60.  The 'B' squad of Wingard, G. Long, Forsythe, and Shim would go 12th (3:51.96).                 

Day 3

The final day of the invite brought the excitement with the Maroon and Grey adding another 190.5 points.  Jansen got the day started with big points in the 1650 Free winning the event with a 16:09.37, shaving off nearly :36 seconds from his seed time.  T. Long followed in the 100 IM placing 3rd with a 53.50.  Eddow got his first action of the day in the 200 Free placing 3rd with a time of 1:42.46.  He finished in front of Jansen (7th – 1:48.20) and Loudon (14th – 1:49.24). 

Heaston came out strong in the 100 Fly finishing 6th with a 52.25, while Forsythe and Gile went 12th (54.00) and 16th (54.31).  Walker was one of five Bulldogs competing in the 100 Breast.  He took 2nd overall with a 57.70 and was followed by T. Long (9th – 59.59), Wingard (10th – 1:00.43), G. Long (20th – 1:05.64), and Shim (22nd – 1:06.64). 

Forsythe returned in the 50 Free placing 4th overall in a full field posting a 21.90, while Gile took 12th (22.46).  Walker had a nice showing in the 400 IM placing 2nd overall with a 4:12.30, but it was Wingard who had the biggest jump finishing 9th (4:20.06), while shaving off four seconds from his prelim time.  The last event of the invite was the 400 Free Relay where the team of Heaston, T. Long, Gile, and Eddow finished 4th with a 3:10.15.                    

Redlands returns to the pool in the new year for a non-conference match-up with the University of Puget Sound on Saturday, January 8 beginning at 11:00am.
