Redlands Baseball Falls Short against Whittier College

Junior first baseman Eliot Smith (West Linn, OR) drove in two of the University of Redlands baseball team's three runs as the Bulldogs dropped a 3-10 decision to visiting Whittier College on Saturday at The Yard.

Although starting pitcher, junior Adam Byrd (Bullhead City, AZ), surrendered only one earned score in the third stanza, the Bulldogs fell behind by four after the Poets capitalized on a pair of errors.

Whittier continued to push across runs with a two-spot in the top of the fourth.

Despite the six-run lead, the Maroon and Gray was determined to get on the board, posting a trio of runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Senior shortstop Chase Tucker (Poway, CA) got things started as he led off the inning with a single up the middle. With runners on second and third and just one out, Smith dropped a single to left field, plating Tucker and senior left fielder Trenton Lively (La Verne, CA), who had reached earlier on a single to right.

Redlands cut Whittier's lead in half at 3-6 when sophomore center fielder Alex Scheiewe connected for a base-hit to left. However, the Bulldogs' rally was cut short as Scheiwe was gunned down when trying to advance to third on a single by freshman right fielder Connor Hancock.

Whittier right-hander Ryan Schwenn regained his composure and only allowed another two hits for the remainder of his outing. Schwenn collected the win, going 8.0 innings and allowing three runs on 11 hits while fanning four.

Byrd took the loss after giving up six runs, one earned, on six hits through 4.0 innings of work.

Scheiwe finished the day with a 2-for-5 showing with an RBI, while Lively went 2-for-3 with one run scored.

Redlands looks to get back on the winning track when it travels to Cal Lutheran University on Sunday for a 1 p.m. start against the Kingsmen.
