Tori Zielinski named SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Year

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. – The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced the 2023 All-SCIAC awards for Women's Water Polo and earning 1st Team and Defensive Athlete of the Year (DATY) honors was goalkeeper Tori Zielinski (Sunnyvale, CA).

This is the first All-SCIAC honor Zielinski has received, while earning the first Defensive Athlete of the Year recognition in program history. She finished her senior season with a goal, three assists, 33 steals, 256 saves, a .525 save percentage, and allowed only 9.62 goals per game.

Her 256 saves are the eighth most in single-season program history, second most overall among SCIAC keepers, and seventh most across all divisions in the country. Her save percentage is also second among SCIAC goalkeepers, she averaged 10.7 saves per game, the most in SCIAC and the fourth most in the country.

In SCIAC play she finished with 21 steals, the fifth most among all players, led SCIAC in saves with 136, had the best save percentage at .624, snd was second in goals against average (GAA) among players with double digit games play, at 6.83.

As a senior Zielinski ends her career with the fourth most career saves with 552 and the seventh most steals as a goalkeeper with 60.  This year she was also recognized as the SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Week four times.    

She will attend graduate school next year in Hawaii Pacific University and plans to play soccer.
