REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Water Polo team (7-15, 6-4 SCIAC) got back in the win column with a 9-3 win over Occidental College Monday evening inside the Thompson Aquatic Center (TAC).
The Bulldogs had control of the game from the first minute as they scored the first five goals. The first connection came from Danielle Cary (Riverside, CA) who scored :57 seconds into the contest. The rest of the first quarter saw Courtney Sawin (Tacoma, WA) and Emma Parker (Yucaipa, CA) find the back of the net with Sofia Portello (Sonoma, CA) and Tori Zielinski (Sunnyvale, CA) each picking up assists as the lead was 3-0 after eight minutes.
In the first three plus minutes of the second quarter Parker and Cary netted their second scores of the game as Cary and Portello set up each goal to put Redlands up 5-0 with 4:45 remaining in the half. The last 2:37 saw the Tigers score two goals off turnovers to make it a 5-2 game at the break.
In the third the Bulldogs outscored the Tigers 3-0 as Portello scored her first while Parker had another goal and an assist to make it 7-2. The third goal came as time expired as Zielinski added to her assist with a goal off a Kaitlynn Pierceall (Beaumont, CA) feed.
Each team scored once in the fourth quarter as Breanna Bailey (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) scored her first to help the Bulldogs to a 9-3 win.
Redlands scored their nine goals on only 18 shots while they held Occidental to a .125 shooting percentage (3-for-24). The defense also did a great job when they were a player short on powerplays as they did not concede on any of the eight opportunities for the Tigers.
Parker scored a hat trick and Cary added two goals and two assists. Portello and Sawin each had three steals while Zielinski in goal made 13 saves, had a game-high five steals, scored, and added an assist.
Redlands is at home for their final two games of the regular season. Their next matchup is with California Lutheran University this Wednesday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m. inside the TAC.
