A defensive masterclass by Bulldog Women's Water Polo gets them past Occidental

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Water Polo team put together another strong defensive performance Saturday morning beating Occidental College at the De Mandel Aquatic Center 9-5 completing the season sweep over the Tigers. 

Redlands improves to 8-12, 5-8 SCIAC and have now won three in a row.  During those victories they have held their opponents to single digits making it eight of their last ten contests where they have done this.     

The Maroon and Grey took control of the game in the 1st Quarter with three goals in the first 1:18 as Emma Parker (Yucaipa, CA)Holly Kvanvig (Beaverton, OR), and Courtney Sawin (Tacoma, WA) all scored with Sofia Portello (Sonoma, CA) recording an assist. Parker would then get a second with 3:34 left in the period extending the Bulldog lead to 4-0.    

Each team added a goal in the 2nd Quarter with Parker netting a hat trick, which helped the Bulldogs take a 5-2 lead into the break. 

The 3rd Quarter started as a battle with the Tigers cutting the deficit to two, 6-4, at the halfway mark.  After that UR buckled down defensively holding the Tigers scoreless until there was only 1:29 left in the game.  During that span the Bulldogs would add four tallies from Kvanvig, Sawin, Katrina Nielsen (Houston, TX) and Rachel Lamb (Norco, CA).  This moved the score to 9-4 and they didn't look back holding on for the road win.   

The Bulldogs dominated the game with a 28-17 shot advantage and were 1-for-6 on powerplays.  They also earned goal contributions from seven different players. In goal the Bulldogs' defense was so stout that Tori Zielinski (Sunnyvale, CA) only faced 11 shots on-goal, making six saves and recording one steal in 32 minutes.

Redlands concludes their 2022 season with a road game at Cal Lutheran University this Wednesday, April 20 beginning at 4:00pm.
