Bulldog Women's Water Polo Cruises to a 15-2 Win at Caltech

The University of Redlands women's water polo team headed to Caltech on Wednesday night for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game against the Beavers. Heavy offense and stealthy defense propelled the Maroon and Gray to a solid 15-2 win.

After three minutes of no scoring, first-year goalkeeper Erin Ross (Newport Beach, CA) swiped a steal that eventually turned into a goal from sophomore attacker Holly Kvanvig (Beaverton, OR) with 5:19 left in first. Two minutes later, Ross grabbed another steal and fed first-year attacker Katrina Nielsen (Houston, TX) who found junior attacker Kelly Klish (Glenview, IL) for the score and a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs found the back of the net twice more in the first off of goals from Nielsen and first-year attacker Alyssa Baratelle (Lake Elsinore, CA) to make it 4-0 through one quarter.

Baratelle and Kvanvig were responsible for Redlands first two second-period scores as Nielsen assisted two more over the remaining eight minutes. She first found senior attacker Courtney Gray (Yucaipa, CA) at 2:18 and then junior defender Sarah Draves (Fallbrook, CA) at 1:35 for an 8-0 advantage at halftime.

The Maroon and Gray defense dominated on their end of the pool as well, with seven steals to hold Caltech scoreless in the first half.

Although Caltech put one through the posts in the third and fourth quarters, seven different Bulldogs found the back of the net in that same span to head home with a 15-2 victory.

Baratelle led the team with three goals while Nielsen added two goals, six assists, and a team-high three steals.

The Bulldogs (3-3, 1-0 SCIAC) return home to the Thompson Aquatic Center for an 11 a.m. match against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday, February 29.
