U of R Women's Water Polo Boasts Talented Trio among All-Conference Honorees

It was announced earlier today by the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) that senior utility player Taylor Christie (Anaheim, CA) and senior attack player Annie Kinney (Newport Beach, CA) of the University of Redlands women's water polo program were selected to the All-SCIAC Second Team for their contributions during the Bulldogs' 4-7 showing in conference action.  In addition, senior utility player Caitlyn Freeman (Brentwood, CA) represented Redlands on the All-SCIAC Sportsmanship Team.

Christie, one of the most potent weapons for the Bulldogs throughout her four-year career, hauled in her second-consecutive All-SCIAC honor after being named to the sportsmanship squad in 2015. Throughout the season, Christie had a knack for locating the back of the net by scoring in every SCIAC competition en route to 23 conference goals. She fired off a season-high five goals against Occidental College, followed by a four-score showing against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

Kinney acted as a scoring force in the pool en route to securing the first All-SCIAC recognition of her solid career. Kinney displayed offensive prowess by scoring in all but one SCIAC competition this season. Additionally, she led her squad in conference goals with 25. She put together three separate occasions during which she netted four goals, two of which came against Occidental College and the other taking place against conference champion Whittier College.

Freeman caps off her four-year, two-sport career with this year's All-SCIAC Sportsmanship Award.  As a swimmer and water polo player, she was the consummate student-athlete with outstanding success in the classroom.  Despite battling injuries, she found ways to contribute from the pool deck as an exemplary captain in her final season.

Head Coach Chris Gielen commented, "Caitlyn had her final season cut short due to health reasons, but showed up to every practice for the duration, and fulfilled her role as a captain [by] setting the example for the young players on the team. Caitlyn represents the rare group of athletes who work for every inch they get, and are grateful to play the sport they love at the collegiate level."
