Eleven Redlands Women's Water Polo Players Garner ACWPC All-Academic Honors, Team Ranks Sixth for GPA

It was announced on June 29 that 11 women's water polo players from the University of Redlands gained All-Academic honors from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC).

In addition to the 11 individuals, Redlands women's water polo ranked sixth among member schools, which includes NCAA Division I, II, and III institutions, with a team cumulative GPA of 3.33.

Student-athletes qualify for this honor by being an active participant on their varsity squad while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. Those who have cumulative GPAs between 4.0 and 3.71 land among the "outstanding" category, while those between 3.70 and 3.41 earn "superior" accolades and those between 3.40 and 3.20 gain "excellent" recognition.

Junior goalkeeper Tiana Singley (Benicia, CA), freshman driver Georgia Tunioli (Riverside, CT) and senior goalkeeper Whitney Schieler (Porterville, CA) headline the academic laurels for Redlands with "outstanding" GPAs.

In her first year at Redlands, Singley played a reserve role in the cage during the Bulldogs' 15-14 campaign. While boasting a 4.00 cumulative GPA as a Communicative Disorders major, she accumulated 20 saves, three steals, and one assist in the pool.

As an Environmental Science major, Tunioli gained a 3.829 GPA during her inaugural year at Redlands. This rookie played an instrumental part in the Bulldogs' success with 21 steals, 18 goals, 12 assists, and seven ejections drawn.

With a 3.794 GPA, Schieler graduated in May with a degree in Communicative Disorders while taking on the primary net-minding duties for the Bulldogs. With 205 saves, she served an integral part in the team's 6-4 conference season, which led to a spot on the All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Second Team. Her stellar academic and athletic contributions also resulted in College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Second-Team honors earlier this spring.

Junior driver Chandler Weeks (Palm Desert, CA), sophomore driver Joy Corona (Lake Bluff, IL), sophomore center Jaime Nippert (Gresham, OR) and freshman driver Lindsey Zehner (Portland, OR) all boast ACWPC All-Academic "superior" honors.

Weeks owns a cumulative GPA of 3.589 as a Biology major. In the pool, she provided an impressive play-making role by racking up a team-leading 31 assists. She also contributed the most field blocks on the team with 10 while adding 28 steals and 16 goals.

With a 3.497 GPA as an English Literature major, Corona led the team with 59 ejections drawn while amassing 29 goals, 18 steals, and seven assists.

After making her presence known in 2010, Nippert offered a team-leading 53 goals to go along with 35 ejections drawn, 29 steals and 28 assists. This Liberal Studies and Communicative Disorders double major boasts a solid GPA of 3.488 in her second year at Redlands and landed on the All-SCIAC First Team.

Zehner's cumulative GPA of 3.474 gains "superior" status with the ACWCP All-Academic awards. During her rookie campaign in the pool, she provided 12 goals, 12 assists, and five steals.

Freshman driver Moana Tuipulotu (Lahaina, HI), junior driver Tory Haynes (Valley Center, CA), freshman center Rebecca Moore (San Diego, CA), and senior driver Jade Valenzuela (Indio, CA) round out the Bulldogs' awards with their "excellent" distinction.

Tuipulotu broke onto the scene during the 2010 season by scoring 40 goals to rank second among the Bulldogs. With a 3.275 GPA as an Environmental Studies major, she also provided 45 steals, 29 ejections drawn, and 15 assists.
