The University of Redlands women's volleyball team closed out the 2019 season on the road Saturday night at Cal Lutheran University, dropping the match in three sets (13-25, 21-25, 21-25). It caps the Bulldogs' record at 8-19 overall and 5-11 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
Junior middle blocker Hannah Lanyon (San Diego, CA) led Redlands on the attack, finishing with eight kills, while only committing one error to finish with a .636 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Paige Davidson (Spanaway, WA) followed with seven kills. Senior setter Emily Marty (San Diego, CA) closed her collegiate career with 18 assists on the night, while sophomore setter Tati Luevano (San Pablo, CA) dished out another 12.
The Regals came out too hot to handle, boasting a .500 hitting clip as a team in the first set and won it 25-13.
Redlands looked to bounce back in the second and opened on a 4-1 run to take an early lead. Davidson opened the set with a kill and capped the run with an ace.
Cal Lutheran turned things around to take the upper hand 8-5, but another ace from Davidson put the Bulldogs within one, 13-14.
Once again, the Regals built back their lead, but Redlands wouldn't let the home team get too far in front. Senior middle blocker Sofia Olsson (Cupertino, CA) laid down a kill to put the Bulldogs back within two, 23-21, but Cal Lutheran grabbed the next two points to take the set 25-21.
Similar to the second, Redlands came out strong to start the third and opened with a 6-1 run. Olsson sparked the scoring spree, which also saw two kills from senior outside hitter Christina Casey (Sherwood, OR) and another from freshman outside hitter/middle blocker Sydney Feenstra (Blaine, WA).
Cal Lutheran battled back to even the score at 8-8, before taking a 14-10 lead with five unanswered points.
Junior Libero Ally Busch (Long Beach, CA) served up an ace to keep the Bulldogs close, 17-18, before Luevano had an ace of her own to tie things up at 19-19.
The Regals grabbed some separation, however, and sealed the 25-21 set victory to take the match in three.
