Bulldog Volleyball Silences Poets of Whittier in 3-0 Sweep

The University of Redlands volleyball team captured its 18th win of the 2010 season with a 3-0 sweep against Whittier College on Friday night. The Bulldogs held on for a tight 26-24 victory in the opening set and then rolled by the Poets in the second stanza by a score of 25-17. The Maroon and Gray finished the match in straight sets with a 25-22 showing in the final frame.

Redlands gained double-digit kill performances from senior middle blocker Megan Phillips (Vista, CA) and senior outside hitter Jackie Hamilton (Loma Linda, CA) with 13 and 12, respectively. Phillips unleashed a .393 hitting percentage to lead the Bulldogs.

In addition, freshman setter Alisha Cornick (Hollister, CA) dished out 36 assists to go along with 12 digs. Senior libero Chelsea Arcaris (Vista, CA) posted a team-high 34 digs from the back row as Hamilton added 14 of her own.

The team registered a .232 hitting percentage, compared to Whittier's showing of .136. Redlands also gained a slight advantage with five blocks and 89 digs.

The Bulldogs (18-10, 6-7 SCIAC) currently sit sixth among the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) schools and look forward to hosting first-place Cal Lutheran University for Senior Night on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
