On the heels of last night’s victory, the University of
Redlands volleyball team captured another hard-fought Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win by
prevailing over Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in five sets. The Maroon and
Gray relied on the impressive hitting of junior outside hitter
Jackie Hamilton (Loma Linda, CA), who led the match with 27 kills
in a school-record-tying performance.
In the opening stanza, the Sagehens came out firing at a .297 clip,
earning 13 kills and only 2 errors. Despite a late rally by the
Bulldogs, Pomona-Pitzer took the first set, 25-21.
Steadying the course, Redlands rallied back with its own
outstanding display of offense that registered at an outstanding
.483 hitting percentage. The Bulldogs quickly tied the match at one
set all with their 25-14 win.
The third set saw 11 tied scores and four lead-changes as the
Bulldogs prevailed in a tight 25-22 showing.
The Maroon and Gray held a substantial lead in the fourth set, but
the Sagehens clawed their way back and even faced set point.
Following a timeout, Pomona-Pitzer took care of business and earned
the 27-25 win to send the match into a deciding fifth set.
Due to tough serving and relentless defense, Redlands jumped out to
an early 5-1 lead and never looked back, cruising to a 15-7 victory
for the match.
Hamilton earned a .381 hitting percentage off of her 27 kills to
tie the school record for single-match kills. She also tallied 20
digs and one solo block in the win. Junior Megan Phillips (Vista,
CA) added 16 kills and four block assists, while senior right side
hitter Katy Douglass (Roseville, CA) posted a mark of .348, which
included no errors on eight kills. Senior setter Kelina Smith
(Kurtistown, HI) distributed 61 assists and tallied four service
aces. Senior libero Lauren Harding (Altadena, CA) supplied a
team-leading 27 digs for Redlands.
For the Sagehens, senior outside hitter Sarah Amos (Palos Verdes
Estates, CA) came up with 15 kills as junior right side hitter
Eleanor Hughes (St. Paul, MN) added 10. Sophomore libero Heidi
Leonard (Del Mar, CA) posted 30 digs to lead the Pomona-Pitzer
defense.
The Bulldogs (7-3, 2-1 SCIAC) head to Occidental College on
Tuesday, September 29, for a 7:30 p.m. conference match.
