The University of Redlands volleyball team cruised to a
three-set victory over visiting Mills College today during the
Bulldogs’ home opener of the 2009 season. Relying on solid
attacking and the depth of its lineup, the Maroon and Gray earned
the sweep by scores of 25-11, 25-10, 25-14.
Redlands jumped out to an early lead in the opening set and never
looked back. Utilizing 18 of its 20-woman roster, the Bulldog
offense erupted with a .388 hitting percentage. Leading the team,
junior middle blocker Megan Phillips (Vista, CA) notched the only
double-digit figure in kills with 11, posting an impressive mark of
.529 on 17 total attempts. Junior outside hitter Jackie Hamilton
(Loma Linda, CA) provided nine kills with a hitting percentage of
.444, while senior outside hitter Ali Massei (San Carlos, CA) put
away five kills on seven attempts for a ridiculous mark of
.714.
Senior setter Kelina Smith (Kurtistown, HI) and sophomore setter
Allison Light (Wildomar, CA) split time running the offense and
supplied 27 and 12 assists, respectively.
On defense, the Bulldogs gained a match-leading 18 digs from senior
libero Lauren Harding (Altadena, CA).
Redlands (4-2) returns to action later tonight for a non-conference
match with La Sierra University at 7:30 p.m.
