Redlands Volleyball Loses Steam, Drops 3-1 Decision Against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges

Unable to ride the momentum from an afternoon win against Elizabethtown College (PA), the University of Redlands volleyball team fell 3-1 (26-24, 22-25, 20-25, 18-25) to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Oct. 10 in the second match of a doubleheader.

After winning the first set, the Bulldogs lost by a narrow margin in the second and third sets before it appeared as though the Sagehens had the match wrapped up. The maroon and gray valiantly fought back, however, in the fourth set, only to come up just short against their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe.

On offense, sophomore middle blocker Megan Phillips (Vista, CA) and sophomore outside hitter Jackie Hamilton (Loma Linda, CA) led the way for the Bulldogs with 14 and 13 kills, respectively.

Junior setter Kelina Smith (Kurtistown, HI) took most of the setting duties, racking up 30 assists on the evening. Also contributing significant numbers to the team’s final assist total was freshman setter Allison Light (Wildomar, CA) who provided 13.

Four Bulldogs reached double-digit figures in the dig column. Junior libero/defensive specialist Lauren Harding (Altadena, CA) notched a match-high 25 digs while junior outside hitter Katy Douglass (Roseville, CA), sophomore libero/defensive specialist Chelsea Arcaris (Vista, CA) and Hamilton earned 15, 13 and 10 digs, respectively, against the Sagehens.

Leading the way for Pomona-Pitzer was Kenzie Aries who split time between setting and playing as an outside hitter. Aries assisted on 25 kills while providing 11 digs.

Redlands (10-10, 4-4 SCIAC) takes a weeklong break before traveling to Orange to face Chapman University on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 12 noon.
