Redlands Women’s Volleyball Edges Chapman University 3-2

Finding itself on the winning end of a gritty non-conference match, the University of Redlands women’s volleyball team (6-7, 2-1 SCIAC) prevailed against Chapman University, taking three of the five games played (25-21, 25-16, 19-25, 19-25, 15-7).

Freshman middle blocker Emily Capozzoli (Poway, CA) had a breakout game, notching a match-high 18 kills and amassing a respectable .317 kill percentage. Helping out Capozzoli on offense was sophomore middle blocker Megan Phillips (Vista, CA) who earned 10 kills on the match. The two offensive standouts also manned the net, as Phillips tallied one solo block and three block assists while Capozzoli recorded five block assists.

Head Coach Mari Burningham rotated her setters, which gave both junior setter Kelina Smith (Kurtistown, HI) and freshman setter Allison Light (Wildomar, CA) similar assist totals. Smith led the team with 25 assists while Light compiled 20.

Due to the long rallies throughout the match, numerous student-athletes on both squads picked up high dig totals. Junior libero/defensive specialist Lauren Harding (Altadena, CA) led both teams in digs with 27 on the match while sophomore outside hitter Jackie Hamilton (Loma Linda, CA) also contributed 18. Knocking on the door of double-digit dig totals, Smith and junior outside hitter Katy Douglass (Roseville, CA) each provided nine.

During the third and fourth sets, Chapman’s Jill Felger caused problems for Redlands, notching a few of her 11 kills total off of sets by Kat Kowalski.

Kowalski monopolized the setting duties for the Panthers, stockpiling 39 assists.

On defense, a plethora of Chapman student-athletes reached double-digit dig totals. Erin DeRycke paced the team with 23 digs with Linda Ly following closely behind with 19. Lyndsey Cargile and Kowalski each provided 11 apiece.
