U of R Women’s Tennis holds off No. 23 Christopher Newport 6-3

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team collected their second straight victory on the season holding off No. 23 Christopher Newport 6-3 inside the Verdieck Tennis Center.  

The Bulldogs took two of three doubles and then four of six singles matches to pick up the win as they improve to 2-0.

Redlands jumped out to a 2-0 start with wins coming at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles both by the score of 8-3.  Sophomores Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) and Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) were paired up at No. 2 and Gabby Rockwood (Park City, UT) and Mia Goldstein (Ann Arbor, MI) came together at No. 3.  The lone loss for UR coming at the top spot from Olivia Rockwood (Park City, UT) and Kendall Bolock (Yucaipa, CA) who fell 8-2 giving the Captains their first point on the evening. 

Three straight victories in singles clinched the win for the Bulldogs.  O'Brien made quick work of her opponent at No. 5 not giving up a game winning 6-0, 6-0.  Brady followed at No. 3 rolling 6-1, 6-0 and Madison Sherwood (Las Vegas, NV) clinched the win at No. 6 with a solid 6-4, 6-1 sweep.

Christopher Newport tried to make a comeback but it was too late.  The Captains grabbed points at No. 2 singles as L. Rockwood would fall 6-4, 6-1 followed by Goldstein at No. 4 who took the opening set 6-3 before falling 6-1, 11-9. 

Bolock was the last Bulldog on at the top spot and she grabbed the final point on the evening grinding out a 7-5, 7-6 (0) win against Raime Weil.       

Redlands returns to the court Friday, March 10 at 3:00pm when they take on Vassar College inside the Verdieck Tennis Center.
