Redlands Women’s Tennis rolls No. 14 Mary Washington 7-2

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team put together a statement win Tuesday afternoon upsetting No. 14 University of Mary Washington 7-2 at the Verdieck Tennis Center.

Redlands jumped in front 2-1 after doubles before taking five of six singles to come away with their first win of 2023. 

First-year Mia Goldstein (Ann Arbor, MI) and junior Madison Sherwood (Las Vegas, NV) paired up together at No. 3 doubles and they made quick work of their opponents winning 8-4.  Olivia Rockwood (Park City, UT) and Kendall Bolock (Yucaipa, CA) followed with an 8-3 win at No. 1 putting UR on top 2-0.  It then came down to No. 2 with Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) and Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) going the distance only to fall 8-7 (5) in a breaker allowing the Eagles to get on the scoreboard.

Mary Washington leveled the match with a win at No. 3 as Brady would fall 6-4, 6-0.  O'Brien would put UR back on top with a straights set win 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 and L. Rockwood would extend the lead to 4-2 following a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 2.  The clinch came at No. 6 from Sherwood who had to grind out a straights set win over Riley Smith needing a breaker in the opening set 7-6 (4) and a late break in the second 6-4. 

The final two matches on were both victories for the Maroon and Grey.  Bolock held off Abby Moshteder at No. 1 winning 7-5, 6-4 and Goldstein would need a third set at No. 4 to beat Bekah Stepleman 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.          

Redlands returns to the court next week, Wednesday, March 8 when they host No. 23 Christopher Newport beginning at 5:00pm.
