The No. 21 University of Redlands women's tennis team rallied back from an early deficit to push past the No. 33 Christopher Newport University (VA) Captains by a score of 5-4 in Friday's non-conference match on Verdieck Courts. After winning just one of the doubles matches, the Bulldogs needed four of the six singles to pull out the hard-fought win, with the deciding point coming off of the racket of junior Emily Murnin (Salt Lake City, UT) at the No. 2 slot.
In doubles, seniors Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) and Lauren Villanueva (El Segundo, CA) scored the Bulldogs' only point, downing their No. 1 opponents by a lopsided score of 8-1.
Down by an overall tally of 1-2, Redlands regained the lead with efficient wins from Villanueva at No. 3 and Etchegaray at No. 2. They both prevailed by scores of 6-1, 6-1.
After CNU evened the count at three apiece with a victory at No. 5, freshman Elizabeth Johnson (Portland, OR) answered back for the Maroon and Gray with her 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 comeback effort at the No. 4 position.
However, the Captains responded once again with a three-set win at No.6, forcing the match to come down to the results at No. 2. Nonetheless, Murnin handled the pressure well by defeating her counterpart, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, to secure the Bulldogs' fifth win of the season.
Redlands (5-1) looks forward to hosting No. 19 Case Western Reserve University (OH) on Wednesday, March 9, at 3 p.m. on Verdieck Courts.
