The No. 13 University of Redlands women's tennis team faced off against seventh-ranked Bowdoin College (ME) in Tuesday's non-conference showdown on Verdieck Courts.  After winning one of the doubles matches, the Bulldogs hit a cold streak against the Polar Bears and suffered a 1-8 defeat.

After Bowdoin grabbed the first win at No. 3, the Maroon and Gray answered with a hard-fought 9-7 triumph at the No. 2 slot, as sophomore Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) and junior Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) prevailed over their counterparts.

With the team score tied at one, the squads excitedly watched the No. 1 match, with senior Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) and junior Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) representing the Bulldogs.  However, the Polar Bears pushed past the Maroon and Gray in another 9-7 showing, giving a slight edge to the visitors.

That momentum shift was all that Bowdoin needed, as it cruised to straight-set wins in all six singles matches.

For Redlands, Etchegaray challenged her No. 2 opponent with a 6-4, 7-5 effort but that was not enough for the upset.

The Bulldogs (6-5, 1-0 SCIAC) jump back into Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition on Friday when they host No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in a 2 p.m. match on Verdieck Courts.
