In an exciting women's soccer match at Farquhar Field on Wednesday evening, the University of Redlands Bulldogs topped the Panthers of Chapman University by a score of 2-0. The win moves Redlands into third place overall in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC).
In what was a relatively quiet first half for both teams, Redlands senior goalkeeper Linzey Smith (Anaheim Hills, CA) made a crucial save to keep the score even at 0-0. On the game, Smith tallied two saves in 45 minutes of action.
End-to-end play ensued in the second stanza with both teams creating great opportunities. The Bulldogs finally broke through after a flurry of shots in the 87th minute when sophomore forward Sierra Duarte (Portland, OR) found freshman midfielder Savannah Laursen (Boise, ID) on top of the 18-yard box. Laursen took the opportunity and ripped a shot over the Panther goalkeeper for her second netter in as many games.
As the clock wound down in the waning seconds of the match, senior midfielder Kendall Pegan (Lafayette, CA) received a beautiful through-ball from fellow senior midfielder Rheana Bales (Issaquah, WA) and tucked it away with just one second remaining on the clock, securing the victory for Redlands.
On the game, Redlands out-shot Chapman, 17-13, in addition to winning the shots-on-goal battle, 7-5.
Junior goalkeeper Sabrina Grandke-Bawab (Kirkland, WA) played the entire second half to help preserve the shutout by notching three important saves while earning her first win of the season.
Redlands (3-1-1, 2-1-0) takes to the road on Saturday when it travels to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges to take on the Athenas. CMS is unbeaten in SCIAC play thus far. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
