Bulldog Women’s Soccer Bounces Back with 3-0 Victory over Whittier

The University of Redlands women's soccer team poured on the offense during Wednesday's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) showdown as it defeated Whittier College at Graham Field by a score of 3-0. With the victory, the Bulldogs halt a four-game skid and look to carry the momentum into the second half of conference play.

The Bulldogs initiated the scoring in the 31st minute of action when senior forward Jessi Hoyt (Boise, ID) found an open junior midfielder Jaime Morton (Boise, ID) in a scramble in front of the goal. Morton tapped the ball past Poet goalkeeper Megan Wessel to post her first netter of the season.

Less than five minutes into the second half, senior forward Emily Birzak (Columbia, MD) kept the pressure on by scoring her third goal of the 2010 campaign. Senior forward Leslie Horner (Portland, OR) contributed to the play by dishing out her team-leading third assist.

Moments later, senior captain defender Chelsea Hafley (Redlands, CA) struck a 25-yard free kick to the near post, giving the Maroon and Gray a 3-0 lead at 51:59 into the game.

Sophomore goal keepers Rachel Foreman (San Jose, CA) and Linzey Smith (Anaheim Hills, CA) split time between the pipes, contributing to Redlands' fifth shutout of the season.

Redlands clearly controlled the ball throughout the game, earning 31 shots to Whittier's five. In addition, the Bulldogs garnered three corner kick opportunities and held the Poets to none.

The Bulldogs (5-6, 3-3 SCIAC) next see action on Saturday as they travel to play the Leopards of the University of La Verne at 11 a.m.
