Redlands Women’s Soccer Shuts Down Swarthmore College 3-0

The University of Redlands women’s soccer team took down the team that trekked more than 2,500 miles to play it, Swarthmore College (PA), winning the Oct. 13 match by a 3-0 final.

Facing its first East Coast opponent this year, the team battled the Garnet under frigid conditions that resembled those of their Pennsylvania home as fans and players alike were bundled up on a chilly fall evening.

Sophomore defender Breann Puchalski (Redlands, CA) scored first off of a penalty kick, giving the Bulldogs the go-ahead goal, which eventually would end up being the game-winner.

Off of a short pass by senior midfielder Becky Willis (Escondido, CA) in the 23rd minute of action, sophomore midfielder Jessi Hoyt (Boise, ID) fired in a one-touch shot that reached the back of the net.

Despite coming off of the bench, freshman defender Maddy Phillips (Seattle, WA) tallied a match-high four shots and got rewarded for her persistence with a goal in the 53rd minute. Sophomore midfielder Leslie Horner (Portland, OR) fed her the ball on a cross-field pass and earned the assist on the play.

Both Bulldog goalkeepers saw time in the net as junior goalkeeper Tenley Rawlings (Salt Lake City, UT) stopped two Garnet shots while sophomore goalkeeper Bailey Hughes (Boise, ID) saved one.

Lauren Walker notched three saves for Swarthmore and allowed two goals while Marie Mutryn saved a shot and surrendered a goal.

In a lopsided statistical battle, Redlands held the upper hand. The Bulldogs outshot the Garnet 17-7 and outchanced the visitors on corner kicks by a 7-3 margin.

Redlands (8-4-1, 4-3 SCIAC) hits the road on Saturday to square off against the University of La Verne in La Verne at 11 a.m. The Bulldogs sit in second place in the conference standings tied with La Verne and Occidental College.
