LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Lacrosse team suffered a tough loss on the road Saturday morning to Occidental College in a high-scoring affair 23-21 in a game that was back and forth.

The Bulldogs have now dropped three of their last four and move to 4-7, 3-4 SCIAC.  They have also split the season series with the Tigers and share the fourth spot in the conference standings together.

Both teams won two quarters apiece with Oxy edging UR 8-4 across the final 15:00 minutes, which proved the difference.  Redlands opened the game up on a 4-1 run with all four tallies coming from four different players, which included Sydney Louie (Lafayette, CA), Erin Steinhour (Poway, CA), Maeve Wiencek (Sherwood, OR), and Joren Fettig (Bend, OR).  But under :40 seconds to play in the opening quarter Oxy was able to tack on two that cut the deficit to one.

A combined 14 goals were scored in the 2nd Quarter with the Tigers holding the 9-5 edge.  They tied the game up on their first possession of the period but saw UR storm back with three of the next four goals as Louie, Fettig, and Steinhour would each add their second of the game.  This would also put Redlands on top 7-5, which wouldn't hold for long as Oxy would string together four unanswered, two of which came on free positions.  Celine Flaig (Redondo Beach, CA) ended the run at the 4:51 mark making it a one score game, but over the final 3:39 Oxy would outscore the Bulldogs 3-1, which included a tally with :09 seconds left to take a 12-9 lead into the break.

Redlands flipped the script in the 3rd Quarter outscoring the Tigers 8-3.  Oxy would add the first goal of the period but would then see UR score seven of the next eight with Louie and Wiencek each scoring a pair joined by Fettig, Steinhour, and Alison Waddles (Long Beach, CA).  This changed the tide with the Maroon and Grey taking a two-goal lead into the final stanza.

Fettig got to work quickly in the 4th Quarter after adding the final strike of the third, finding the back of the net for the fifth time, while stretching the UR lead to three at 18-15.  Wiencek kept it a three-score game at the 11:44 mark, but over the next five minutes it was all Oxy scoring four straight with another two coming on free positions giving them a one-goal lead.  Wiencek was able to stop the run adding a free position goal herself with 4:47 left and Louie put UR back on top by one with an unassisted strike at the 2:51 mark.  But again this lead wouldn't hold as Oxy would put up three straight to end the game, with the eventual game-winner coming on a free position with 1:15 left, securing the win for the Tigers.

The Bulldogs took 34 shots for the game, were 1-for-2 on free positions, grabbed 18 draw controls and 13 groundballs, was a perfect 6-for-6 on clears, while causing 15 turnovers.

Charlie Baum (Hesperia, CA) played all 60:00 minutes between the posts totaling six saves against 29 shots.  A trio of Bulldogs recorded five goals led by Fettig who put up five goals and three assists.  Wiencek added five goals, two groundballs and two draw controls and Louie put up five goals, two assists and five draw controls.  Flaig finished with a stellar line as well with a couple of tallies coupled with three groundballs, six draw controls, and three caused turnovers.

Redlands begins a three-game homestand next Wednesday, April 13 when they host Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 7:00pm.
