For the second game in a row, the University of Redlands women's lacrosse team fired off 16 goals en route to a victory, with Wednesday's performance coming against Whittier College in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition on Farquhar Field. After giving up the first goal of the night, the Bulldogs responded with seven unanswered scores to take a lead that they would not relinquish en route to the final tally of 16-5.
Whittier (0-4, 0-4 SCIAC) initiated the scoring when Jess Hansen connected with Taylor Pool on a short pass to the inside corner to put the visitors up by one less than two minutes into the game.
But that was the Poets' only advantage of the contest.
After regaining possession, the Maroon and Gray quickly evened the count when junior midfielder Emily Dalrymple (Snohomish, WA) received the ball from senior attack player Allie Hoffler (Draper, UT) and fired it past the oncoming goalkeeper.
Hoffler went on to distribute seven assists on the night for a new single-game school record. She found junior midfielder Jacky Craycraft (Trabuco Canyon, CA) with 21:30 remaining in the opening frame to make it 2-1 for the Bulldogs.
Moments later, sophomore midfielder Stephanie Garrett (San Diego, CA) snagged the first of her six draw controls of the night and then successfully converted a free-position shot for the Maroon and Gray.
Hoffler continued her impressive performance by distributing the ball to senior attack player/midfielder KK McCaslin (Portland, OR), Craycraft, Garrett, and junior attack player Liz Keilty (Yorba Linda, CA) to cap off the Bulldogs' 7-1 start to the game.
After Whittier managed back-to-back scores to cut the deficit to four, Hoffler stepped to the other side of the offensive play by scoring one off of a pass from Craycraft with just over two minutes left in the period.
Redlands' momentum carried into the second half, as the Bulldogs uncorked four consecutive netters through the 11:46-mark. Among the highlights, sophomore midfielder Ellen Holt (Happy Valley, OR) notched her first goal of the game by taking advantage of a man-up, free-position opportunity.
The Maroon and Gray closed out the contest on a 4-2 run that resulted in the lopsided victory over the Poets.
McCaslin led the Bulldog offense with four goals, while Garrett and Craycraft both registered a hat trick.
Dalrymple led all players with four ground balls, while freshman midfielder Breanne Rideout (San Diego, CA) collected three to go along with two draw controls and one goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Gigja Hollyday (Aliso Viejo, CA) patrolled the Redlands cage for a complete-game effort that included two saves. She received outstanding support from the starting defenders, including senior Ally Leipzig (Newton, MA), junior Robin Taylor (Poway, CA), and sophomore Angelyn Brown (Danville, CA).
Redlands (3-1, 3-1 SCIAC) takes a break from SCIAC competition with Thursday's 7 p.m. showdown against the Red Dragons of SUNY Oneonta on Farquhar Field. Fans may follow the action via live stats and web-streaming.
