Redlands Women's Lacrosse Invites Community to Third Annual ALS Awareness Night on Friday

The University of Redlands women's lacrosse team looks forward to hosting its third annual ALS Awareness Night on Friday, March 22, when the Bulldogs face Fredonia State University (NY) at 7 p.m. on Farquhar Field.  The event strives to educate spectators about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which is more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Prior to the start of the match, the Reverend John Walsh will conduct a moment of silence to offer support for those who are impacted by the disease.

The women's lacrosse team is selling t-shirts at Friday's game for $15.  In addition, the Bulldogs will hold a raffle for multiple gift cards and shirts.  Single raffle tickets are just $1 or fans may purchase five for $3.

All proceeds will benefit the ALS Association.

"We are proud to help promote the awareness of ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease.  It is a neurological disease that affects up to 30,000 Americans at any time," commented Head Coach Suzette Soboti.  "We hope that we can help make a cure a reality in the near future."

According to the ALS web site (www.alsa.org), about 15 new cases are diagnosed each day.  This progressive, neuromuscular disease that impacts the nerve cells and pathways in the brain and spinal cord most commonly affects people between ages 40-70.  In addition, 50% of those with ALS live at least three years after being diagnosed.  During the latter stages of the disease, individuals may become paralyzed, yet their minds usually stay highly functioning.
