Bulldog Women's Lacrosse Falters to Adrian in Season Finale

Following a six-game road stint, the University of Redlands women's lacrosse team returned home to Farquhar Field on Tuesday night but suffered a 6-20 defeat to non-conference foe Adrian College (MI) in its season finale.

The two teams began the game with careful execution at both ends of the field.

Nearly nine minutes into the game, Adrian struck first on an unassisted goal by Lindsey Day, who finished the night as the game's leading scorer with five.

Redlands' freshman midfielder Crystal Painter (Lake George, NY) responded less than four minutes later by converting a free-position shot.

The Bulldogs held their only lead of the game at 2-1 with 15:30 remaining in the first half when sophomore midfielder Erika Busch (West Linn, OR) found the back of the net.

However, this inspired a seven-goal outburst by Adrian, which secured a 9-2 lead by halftime.

The Maroon and Gray notched the first two goals of the second period as sophomore midfielder Megan Prickett (Poway, CA) and sophomore attack player Ashley Finke (Austin, TX) put the ball away to make it a 4-10 game.

But Adrian countered with 10 unanswered goals to put the game out of reach.

Prickett and junior midfielder Christy Smith (St. Louis Park, MN) both took advantage of free-position shots in the final two minutes to give Redlands its fifth and sixth goals, respectively.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ana Martinez (Pleasanton, CA) patrolled the Redlands' net, making 11 saves in a complete game while adding five ground balls.

Adrian (14-2) extended its winning streak to 13 with tonight's victory.

Redlands (11-8, 6-4 SCIAC) finished out the 2010 campaign by earning the most wins in a season since 2006 when the Bulldogs went 11-4. In addition, the Maroon and Gray mustered a second-place finish in the inaugural season of Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition.
