The University of Redlands women's lacrosse team recorded its fifth win of the season on Wednesday night with a 10-4 showing against the Griffins of Fontbonne University (MO). After gaining a 3-0 lead to start the game, the Bulldogs maintained control through the final whistle.
Senior midfielder Haley Kern (Portland, OR) opened the scoring with 25:44 remaining in the first half. She provided the assists on the next two goals, finding freshman attack player Aimee Dewan (Alamo, CA) at 23:18 and then connecting with sophomore attack player Ashley Finke (Austin, TX) just over two minutes later.
After giving up a goal to the Griffins, the Bulldogs responded with two unanswered scores to close out the half with a 5-1 advantage. Finke and sophomore attack player Blair Callaghan (Tacoma, WA) each found the back of the next during this span.
With 22:16 left in the second period, Dewan and Kern teamed up again to make it a 6-1 lead.
The Griffins rallied for back-to-back goals to cut it to three.
But Redlands gained scores from sophomore attack player Kali Wilgus (Portland, OR) and sophomore midfielder Megan Prickett (Poway, CA) to extend its lead to five.
Fontbonne found the back of the Bulldogs' net for the final time with 10:01 to go.
However, Wilgus and senior attack player Diana Frey (Silver Spring, MD) provided insurance goals for the Maroon and Gray, leading to the final tally of 10-4.
Redlands took 43 shots, compared to Fontbonne's eight, but the Griffins' goalkeeper racked up 17 saves to keep the Bulldogs at bay.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ana Martinez (Pleasanton, CA) notched her fifth win of the season with four saves in a complete game.
Prickett tallied four draw controls for Redlands. Freshman defender Jennifer Bryant (Kennebunkport, ME) corralled four ground balls while causing five opponent turnovers.
Redlands (5-2) looks forward to its fifth home game in a row with a 7 p.m. match-up on Friday, March 19, against Goucher College (MD).
