
The University of Redlands women’s lacrosse team traveled
to Irving, TX, over the weekend for games against the University of
Dallas and Colorado College. The Bulldogs downed the Crusaders of
Dallas by a lopsided score of 23-3 before falling to the Tigers of
Colorado College in a 7-15 defeat.
Against Dallas, Redlands quickly took control with a 10-0 run to
start the game. Senior midfielder Haley Kern (Portland, OR) notched
back-to-back goals in 13 seconds to put the Bulldogs up by a score
of 3-0. Junior midfielder Christy Smith (St. Louis Park, MN) scored
three in just 43 seconds and went on to tally two more later in the
game.
The Crusaders put up their first goal with 4:02 remaining in the
half and then rallied for its second score just 13 seconds into the
second period, cutting the lead to eight at 2-10.
But the Maroon and Gray responded with another impressive run of
goals, rattling off 12 of them from seven different players.
Playing in front of her hometown, senior attack player Mary
Shepherd (Dallas, TX) posted five total goals, including four in a
row in the final 4:20.
Sophomore midfielder Megan Prickett (Poway, CA) tallied a hat trick
of goals, while freshman defender Kelsey Cranmer-Brown (Palo Alto,
CA) and freshman midfielder Crystal Painter (Lake George, NY) each
scored twice.
Outside of goals, Redlands posted 13 assists, with sophomore attack
player Blair Callaghan (Tacoma, WA) contributing four and sophomore
attack player Ashley Finke (Austin, TX) adding three. Freshman
defender Jennifer Bryant (Kennebunkport, ME) recorded a team-high
four ground balls as Prickett and Smith provided four draw controls
each. Sophomore goalkeeper Ana Martinez (Pleasanton, CA) secured
the Redlands net with three saves, earning her second win of the
season.
On Sunday, the Bulldogs took on perennial power Colorado College
and succumbed to the Tigers by a score of 7-15.
After trading goals in the opening minutes, Colorado College poured
on five unanswered goals to take a lead it never relinquished.
Redlands rallied for a late score in the first half but trailed 2-7
at the break.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to four at 4-8 when Smith and freshman
midfielder Katie Colasurdo (Eugene, OR) found the back of the net
on consecutive scores. However, the Tigers continued to press and
successfully kept Redlands at bay en route to the Bulldogs’
first loss of the 2010 season.
Smith recorded three goals for the Maroon and Gray. Colasurdo added
two, and Shepherd and Prickett each scored once. Shepherd also
provided two assists. Martinez made eight stops between the pipes
in 60 minutes of action.
Redlands (2-1) looks forward to a nine-game home stand, beginning
on Fri., March 12, when it hosts Carthage College (WI) at 12 noon.
