Sophomore midfielder Christy Smith (St. Louis Park, MN) netted
eight goals, including five in the second half, as the University
of Redlands women’s lacrosse team survived a scare against
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Wednesday, 16-15.
Down 12-14 with 10:49 left to play, Smith scored on three
occasions, ensuring the victory for the Bulldogs.
Her stat line went deeper than just goals. She also provided two
assists while picking up 11 ground balls and winning seven draw
controls. Defensively, Smith caused a team-high four turnovers as
well.
Smith’s goal tally equaled the program’s second-highest
total in a single game all-time, matching her performance from last
season against Virginia Wesleyan University.
Freshman attack player/defender Ashley Finke (Austin, TX)
registered a hat trick, scoring three times on six shots.
Additional goal scorers for the Maroon and Gray included senior
midfielder Lauren Matta (Holyoke, MA), junior attack player Mary
Shepherd (Dallas, TX), senior midfielder Ali Chope (San Francisco,
CA) and junior attack player Diana Frey (Silver Spring, MD).
Between the pipes, sophomore goalkeeper Katrina Hostak (Maple
Valley, WA) picked up the win, stopping nine shots.
Redlands (2-0) takes on regional foe Colorado College on Friday,
starting an eight-game home stand. The opening draw is set to occur
at 7 p.m. on Farquhar Field.
