No. 8 U of R Women’s Golf upsets four teams at Jekyll Island Invite | Malia Kiger hits Hole in One

JEKYLL ISLAND, GA – The University of Redlands Women's Golf team who is ranked No. 8 in the Division III National Polls put together their biggest tournament of the season over the weekend finishing 2nd overall at the Jekyll Island Invitational.

The Maroon and Grey shot an 895 (305-291-299) over the three days at Jekyll Island Golf Club/Indian Mound.  After Day 1 they found themselves in 11th place but battled to move up to 3rd before finishing the invite in 2nd upsetting No. 1 Carnegie Mellon (897), No. 3 Methodist University (899), No. 5 Centre College (905), and No. 7 Washington & Lee (910). 

No. 2 Emory University took home the team title with an 866 (289-289-288).  Other Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) teams competed as well with No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer finishing 5th and No. 9 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps taking 12th.     

There were a number of highlights for the Bulldogs on the weekend starting with No. 36 Malia Kiger (Hermosa Beach, CA) who hit an ace in Round 2 on No. 12, a 112 yard Par 3.  She finished that round -2 under par (70), which went with her 75-76 (221) for the invite.  She finished in a tie for 12th and is the first golfer under Head Coach Jack Stewart to hit a Hole in One.     

No. 8 Hannah Jugar (Chula Vista, CA) was the top finisher for Redlands tying for 3rd after shooting -3 for the tournament.  After a 73 on Day 1, was able to improve each day after that with a 71-69 (213).  She was two shots off of second, four shots out of first and totaled eleven birdies over the three days, five of which came in round two. 

No. 25 Andrea York (Oakdale, CA) made a big jump after the first day (78) posting a 73-74 that moved her up eight spots into a tie for 23rd (+9).  No. 33 Kendall Nicholson (Bellevue, WA) was the fourth finisher for the Maroon and Grey taking 60th after shooting +21 for the tournament with a 79-78-80 (237). 

No. 16 Gabrielle Kiger (Hermosa Beach, CA) after shooting a 79-77 to keep her in the middle of the pack posted an 80 over the final eighteen holes to drop eleven spots into 65th (238).      

Redlands returns to the links next weekend, March 26-27 when they host the Bulldog Spring Classic in Rancho Mirage (The S Club).
