SCIAC Tournament Final Preview: No. 2 University of Redlands at No. 1 University of La Verne

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team (18-7, 12-4) beat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS), 79-75, in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament Semifinal on Thursday inside Currier Gym. With the win and No. 1 seed La Verne beating No. 4 Cal Lutheran, the Bulldogs will now travel to face the Leopards in the SCIAC Tournament Final on Saturday, February 25 with tipoff set for 5:00 p.m.

The Bulldogs will be looking for their third SCIAC Postseason Tournament Title as they play in their fourth SCIAC Tournament Final under head coach Rich Murphy.

Following their win against CMS, the Bulldogs brought their win total to 18, making it the third-straight season (not including 2020-21 COVID season) with 18 plus wins for the Maroon and Grey. Murphy now has 18 plus wins in eight of his 15 (full) seasons as University of Redlands Head Coach.

The Bulldogs trailed by 13 in the first quarter before going on a 22-6 run over the course of nine and a half minutes that was capped off by a four-point play from Alyssa Downs (South San Francisco, CA). Overall, the Bulldogs' comeback was led by a second and third quarter where they outscored CMS by 15.

In the game the Bulldogs had nine blocks, one off a season high, and their second game with nine blocks against the Athenas. Two of the three games where the Bulldogs have had nine or 10 blocks have happened against CMS. They also had only 10 turnovers, their fourth game with 10 or fewer turnovers, and their second consecutive such game against CMS.

Previous Meetings with La Verne

The Bulldogs and Leopards will meet one another for the third time this season, and the second time within a week. In game one the Bulldogs only led by one and it was in the middle of the first quarter as they lost 62-53 (Box Score | Recap) on the road on December 31. Hannah Jerrier (Canton, MA) had a big game with 14 points, 14 rebounds, four steals, three blocks, and two assists.

In game two and the final regular season game for both teams, the Bulldogs led by 18 points, 48-30, at halftime. The Bulldogs faced foul trouble throughout the second half, notably Colbi Zorich (Kenmore, WA) who only played 15 minutes before fouling out. The Leopards made 20-of-25 free throws in the second half while the Bulldogs only shot four free throws, three makes, all of which came in the third quarter as the Leopards won 82-75 (Box Score | Recap).
