U of R Women's Basketball opens PLU Tournament with loss to No. 20 Puget Sound

PARKLAND, Wash. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team opened up the PLU Tournament in Washington Friday night with a loss to No. 20 University of Puget Sound 76-59. 

Redlands who was short-handed due to injuries saw their winning streak end at four games as they move to 5-2, 2-0 SCIAC, while Puget Sound improves to 7-1, 2-0 NWC.   

Hannah Jerrier (Canton, MA) led the Maroon and Grey with a huge double double with 18 points and 17 rebounds, only one off tying her career-high, to go with four blocks, two steals, and one assist.  Chyanne Pagkalinawan (Valencia, CA) was the only other Bulldog in double figures finishing with 11 points, while dishing out seven assists.  Colbi Zorich (Kenmore, WA) finished her night with seven points, seven rebounds, and a steal.

The Bulldogs got off to a strong start in the opening four minutes of the game holding a four-point lead, 11-7. Aliyah Anderson (Oceanside, CA) had five points during the stretch and Alyssa Downs (South San Francisco, CA) and Pagkalinawan would each knock down triples. 

Redlands conceded the lead with four minutes remaining in the period before Downs made a layup to re-take the advantage, 15-14, at the 2:18 mark. The Loggers would eventually score the final four points taking an 18-15 lead. 

A quick four unanswered points by UR set the tone for the second quarter as they would swing the momentum going back on top. Zorich converted two free throws for her first two points of the game and the margin became one, 19-18.

Following the great start, the Loggers would respond with nine straight over the next 3:27 as they took the largest lead of the game, 27-19.

Downs would end a five-minute scoring drought at the 3:47 mark sparking a 4-0 run that got the Bulldogs within four, 27-23. That stretch would get extended to 14-4 as UR went back on top 33-31. UPS would counter in the final two minutes adding a three as they took a one-point lead into the break, 34-33.

Thirteen seconds into the third quarter Jerrier would finish inside off a Downs assist to regain the lead, 35-34. But the next time down the floor the Loggers would get a quick basket leading to a 9-0 run as pushing their lead to eight, 43-35. Jenna Schmitt (Bellevue, WA) broke up the run with her first points of the game on a layup with 5:08 left, but UPS stayed on track and extended their run to 17-2, growing the lead to fourteen, 51-37.

In the final two minutes of the third the two teams had some back-and-forth as the Bulldogs found themselves down by sixteen, 55-39 following three quarters. 

The Bulldogs' defensive unit came to life in the fourth quarter allowing only four points in the first five minutes, while Jerrier and Zorich would combine for five points.  But these two would be the only ones to score early as the deficit remained double digits. 

Across the final five minutes Jerrier would go off for eight points and was joined by first-year Nataly Bravo (Spring Valley, CA) who scored her first five points of the game as the fourth quarter ended.

As a team the Bulldogs shot 36.7% from the field and 21.4% from deep. They did get the to free throw line 21 more times and were plus 14 there as they were able to stay within single digits into the third quarter.  They posted 22 points in the paint, 11 points off turnovers and wont he battle on the glass 42-31. 

The Bulldogs have a short turnaround with the second of a back-to-back Saturday afternoon, December 17 at 2:00 p.m. when they take on the host Pacific Lutheran University.
