Finals (Saturday, February 26)

Head-to-Head

The Bulldogs and Poets have played twice this season, with Whittier being one of two conference opponents to beat the U of R and the only one to do so inside Currier Gym. Redlands earned the first victory on the road 71-54 (Recap | Box score) back on December 14, 2021 and then lost at home 43-40 (Recap | Box score) on February 2, 2022.

In that 43-40 loss the 40 points was a season-low (0-3 when scoring 60 or fewer points) for the Bulldogs.  They shot a season-low 26.5 percent from the field (2-3 when shooting sub-40 percent), they attempted a season-low 49 field goals (only game with sub-50 field goal attempts), got to the free throw line a season-low nine times (three of their four losses they have attempted 13 free throws or less), tied a season-low with eight assists, had a season-low one steal (in all four losses they have had five or fewer steals), and tied for the second highest game with 22 three-point attempts (2-2 when attempting 20+ threes).

Over the past seven years the Bulldogs have owned the head-to-head against the Poets with a 9-3 record.  They had won the last four match-ups dating back to 2019 before the loss in February.

2021-22 (1-1), 2020-21 (COVID Year), 2019-20 (2-0), 2018-19 (1-1), 2017-18 (2-0), 2016-17 (1-1), 2015-16 (2-0)

University of Redlands

The Bulldogs finished the regular season 18-4, 14-2 SCIAC.  They come into Tuesday riding a five-game winning streak dating back to February 5 and have won seven of their last eight.  In the month of January they faced adversity having to navigate eight games when the program was missing multiple starters due to COVID-19 protocols. But because of their depth and lack of reliance on one or two players to carry the team, they were able to post a 7-1 record.  Redlands has earned a spot in the SCIAC Tournament for a SCIAC record 14th straight year posting a 5-11 record with two titles and a runner-up finish.  In 2020, the Bulldogs found success as the top-seed and claimed the SCIAC Tournament Title before going into the NCAA Championships upsetting the No. 8 seed Wisconsin-Whitewater (70-62).  The previous title before that was in 2010 when the Bulldogs, as the No. 2 seed beat No. 3 Cal Lutheran (63-61) before taking out No. 1 Occidental College (55-54 OT).

Recently the Maroon and Grey have relied on junior Angelina Roque (San Diego, CA) who has been the most consistent scorer down the stretch, averaging 18.0 PPG over the final five games. Overall Roque leads the team in scoring at 15.7 PPG and has utilized her speed and quickness to get to the rim and the free-throw line as she only attempts 1.3 triples per game, while going to the charity stripe 5.5 times per game (T-4th most in SCIAC).  Joining Roque in double figures this season is Alyssa Downs (South San Francisco, CA), Hannah Jerrier (Sr. - Canton, MA), and Chyanne Pagkalinawan (Sr. - Valencia, CA).

Jerrier leads the defensive unit being named the SCIAC Athlete of the Week five times, four of them coming on the defensive end.  This season she averaged 10.3 rebounds (7.6 defensive boards) per game against conference foes, and also blocked 1.6 shots per game. In addition to her defensive prowess, the Canton, Mass. native averaged 12.7 points per outing against league competition, shooting 53.6% from the field, and 64.4% from the free-throw line. Jerrier notched seven double-doubles in 15 SCIAC games played this season, highlighted by a 17-rebound effort in a win over La Verne, and reached double figures on the glass in nine conference contests.
