Rich Murphy and Staff named SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year

2021-22 Women's Basketball All-SCIAC Teams

REDLANDS, Calif. - The 2021-22 All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) women's basketball teams were announced Tuesday following a vote conducted by the league's member head coaches.

University of Redlands Head Coach Rich Murphy and his staff, consisting of Ashley Lona, Mario Trutanic Jr., and Kaden Norton were announced as the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to the 2021-22 SCIAC Regular Season Championship title, which secured the No. 1 seed in the SCIAC Tournament.  The Maroon and Grey are currently riding a five-game winning streak and have won seven of their last eight.  In the month of January the team posted a 7-1 mark and were 6-2 across November and December competition.   

This season the Bulldogs were recognized nationally by d3hoops.com and the WBCA receiving votes in the National Division III Top-25 poll.  Coach Murphy and his staff also saw seven athletes earn SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors, which included Hannah Jerrier (5x), Julia Balestreri, and Angelina Roque.

As a team within conference the Bulldogs ranked No. 1 in Points Per Game (72.6), FG Made Per Game (27.1), FG% (45.7), Def. Rebounds Per Game (29.3), Rebounding Margin Per Game (7.8), and 3PT% (34.8).  They also ranked No. 2 in FT Made Per Game (13.6), Points Per Game Allowed (60.0), and Opponents Field Goal Percentage (35.4).  Then they finished No. 3 in FT Attempts Per Game (18.9), and Assists Per Game (14.5).            

In his 15 seasons at the helm of the women's basketball program, Coach Murphy has made the SCIAC Tournament 14 times and is the only program within SCIAC to make the tournament every year since its inception (SCIAC Tournament was not held in 2021 due to COVID).  Across those fourteen appearances he has combined for three regular season conference championships and two SCIAC Tournament titles.  He has also been selected as the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year three times.
