U of R Women's Basketball Upsets No. 13 Wartburg 72-65

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team pulled off the biggest upset on the season Monday night holding off No. 13 Wartburg College 72-65 inside Currier Gym.

With the win the Maroon and Grey improve to 6-2, 2-0 SCIAC, while Wartburg drops to 8-2, 2-1 Conf.  UR never trailed on the evening shooting 42.2% from the field, 24% from three-point territory and 75% from the free-throw line.  They also won the battle on the glass 39-25, added 16 assists, edged the Knights on blocks by four, put up 14 points off turnovers, and provided 20 points in the paint.

The Bulldogs put together their biggest first quarter of the season when they outscored the Knights 29-6, which included fourteen unanswered to start off the game.  They outshot the Knights from the field in the period (70.6%-11.8%), and made four triples coming back to back from Chyanne Pagkalinawan (Valencia, CA), and Leah Tan (Alhambra, CA). Overall, five players scored for Redlands in the frame with Angelina Roque (San Diego, Calif.) outscoring the Knights by herself as she put up seven of her 22 points across the ten minutes.

"I thought the team played really well tonight, limiting their shooters and executing when we needed to," Roque explained.  "After a tough loss to Master's last week we regrouped and came together for this match-up and had confidence in our preparation."

Redlands' largest lead of the game came at the 8:21 mark in the 2nd Quarter after Pagkalinawan knocked down a jumper. But soon after the Knights would swing the momentum going on an 11-2 run over the next 5:36 that cut the UR lead to 18. Roque was able to stop the run :49 seconds later converting an and-one opportunity that moved the advantage back to twenty and that then led to the Maroon and Grey taking a 40-23 lead into the break.

It was a slow 3rd Quarter for the U of R offensively as they were outscored 24-14, which saw the Knights go on a 15-2 run, which cut the deficit to four, 51-47.  Senior Alyssa Downs (South San Francisco, Calif.) was able to get some excitement back into the crowd knocking down a three with five seconds left that gave the Bulldogs some momentum and a seven-point lead heading into the fourth.

The lead grew to ten at the 8:30 mark in the 4th Quarter following a triple from Pagkalinawan. Then after some back-and-forth, Wartburg was able to battle back to get within three, 60-57. This advantage for UR was then cut to one with 2:18 left, but that's as close as the Knights would get as the Bulldogs would knock down seven free-throws in the clutch to pull off the upset.

Roque had a team-high 22 points along with six rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks. Senior Hannah Jerrier (Canton, Mass.) recorded a double double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Downs and Pagkalinawan each had double-figures finishing with 13 and 16 points respectively.

Redlands returns to the court after the Holidays with a home matchup against Northwestern (MN) on Thursday, December 30 beginning at 2:00pm.
