U of R Women’s Basketball faces tough test with The Master’s

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Coming off a strong road win against Whittier College in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play, the University of Redlands Women's Basketball team remained on the road Thursday night taking on an undefeated Mustang squad.

The Bulldogs fell 90-60 dropping to 5-2, 2-0 SCIAC, while The Master's improves to 12-0.  The loss also ends the three-game winning streak by the Maroon and Grey, which started back on November 27.

The lone Bulldog to reach double figures was Julia Balestreri (Pleasanton, CA) who came off the bench to add 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting.  She also had seven rebounds and three assists.  Monique Carrasco (Calexico, CA) had a strong game as well chipping in with nine points and joined Hannah Jerrier (Canton, MA) who also put up nine points coupled with nine rebounds, and four assists.

It was a strong start offensively for UR as they put up 15 points in the 1st Quarter and another 23 in the 2nd Quarter to stay within 13 at the break.  They used a 7-2 run midway through the first, which included a triple from Carrasco and jumpers from Alyssa Downs (South San Francisco, CA) and Chyanne Pagkalinawan (Valencia, CA) to get within seven.  But after that the Mustangs would string together seven of the next eight to move the deficit back to double digits.

The offense continued to fire on all cylinders in the second, as UR shot 47% from the field and 40% from deep as Balestreri took over inside pouring in ten of her eleven points, while grabbing six rebounds, two of which were on the offensive end.  This kept Redlands in the game trailing only by thirteen as they carried this momentum into the 3rd Quarter adding another 15 points, six of which came from Downs who connected on 3-of-4 from the field.

Trailing by 19 heading into the 4th, the Bulldogs found it tough to keep their offense going getting held to single digits, while seeing the Mustangs add another 18 to their total.

Redlands shot 39% from the field, 27% from three-point territory, and 76% from the free-throw line.  They grabbed 31 rebounds and added 22 points in the paint, while providing 12 points off turnovers.

Redlands returns home to Currier Gym next Monday, December 20 to start off the Holiday Break when they host No. 8 Wartburg College beginning at 2:00pm.
