Alyssa Downs Achieves 1,000 Career Points

REDLANDS, Calif. – Senior University of Redlands Women's Basketball shooting guard Alyssa Downs (South San Francisco, CA) accomplished a tremendous milestone Tuesday night in the road win against Whittier College reaching 1,000 Career Points.

She entered the game six points away from landing in this elite group and she obtained the mark early in the 1st Quarter.  She scored the first basket of the game on a layup and then followed that with a three-pointer to get within one.  Then at the 4:44 mark she broke through knocking down a long-range triple that put her over the mark at 1,002.  Downs finished the game with 10 points and now sits 11th in the U of R Record books with 1,004 Career Points.  She needs 10 points to move into a Tie for 10th All-Time and 30 to get to No. 9.

"This milestone has been something I've wanted to accomplish ever since I joined this program," Downs explained. "I was never able to accomplish hitting 1,000 points in high school, so it was really rewarding to finally accomplish it here at the University of Redlands. I was lucky enough to see my former teammate, Cassandra Lacey, achieve this milestone two years ago, so it meant a lot to me to have finally joined the club."

The last Bulldog to achieve this mark was Cassandra Lacey back in 2020 in a win over Chapman University.  Lacey, who is now the Assistant Coach at Pomona-Pitzer currently sits No. 5 in the Record Books with 1,162 Career Points.  Since 1989, the University of Redlands Women's Basketball team has seen 11 players reach the 1,000 Career Point milestone with Leslie Ferguson sitting atop the list with 1,576 Career Points (1992-1995).

Downs also reflected on her career at the University of Redlands and who played an instrumental role saying "I would not have achieved this milestone if it weren't for my teammates that I have right now as well as my former teammates in the three years I have been here. I think this accomplishment is a testament to the type of unselfish program we have here at the University of Redlands. Coach Murphy has always preached a family culture in our program, and it shows both on and off the court. We love and treat each other like family, and it certainly translates to our success. Lastly, I wouldn't be here without the support of my family and coaches along the way. My parents have sacrificed so much for me so that I could be able to play basketball at the collegiate level and I am extremely grateful for them. My coaches, Alfonso Joo, Stevie Joo, Tiffany Mariano, and Chris Joo have pushed me and sacrificed a lot of their time to help me become a better basketball player and person. I would not be the player or person I am today without the support of my family, friends, and coaches."

In her career Downs has accumulated 1,004 Points, averaging 15.2 PPG, while shooting 39.6% from the field, 39.9% from behind the arc and 85.5% from the free-throw line.  She has also hauled in 238 rebounds, 114 assists, 40 steals and 22 blocks.  Back in 2018-19 she put up 401 points, then in 2019-20 she added 418, in 2020-21 it was a limited season due to COVID, but she added to her total with another 88 points, and this year she already has 97 points.
