U of R Women's Basketball Goes Ahead and Stays Ahead In 66-46 Victory Over Lewis & Clark

The University of Redlands women's basketball team welcomed non-conference competitor Lewis and Clark College (OR) to Currier Gym on Saturday for a 5 p.m. tilt. Despite the Pioneers knocking down the first bucket of the game, the Bulldogs built a sizable lead and never looked back, taking the 20-point victory, 66-46.

Sophomore guard Chyanne Pagkalinawan (Torrance, CA) was responsible for Redlands' first points to tie the game at 2-2 at 8:54 in the first quarter. Her basket sparked a 9-0 Bulldog run for an 11-2 advantage with four-and-a-half minutes left in the period. Sophomore forward Hannah Jerrier (Canton, MA) and sophomore guard Alyssa Downs (South San Francisco, CA) combined for eight of the nine points.

Junior guard Alyssa Lee (Monterey Park, CA) hit a huge three-pointer from first-year guard Angelina Roque (San Diego, CA) with just six seconds left in the opening quarter to enter the second with an 18-6 lead.

Roque continued to make her presence known making the opening jumper to extend Redlands' lead even more.

About halfway through the second, Downs swiped a steal that turned into points after Jerrier made a bucket off her own offensive board. First-year guard Alexis Machain (San Diego, CA) followed that with a trey-ball off an assist from first-year guard Marisa Urbano-Sedlund (San Diego, CA) that forced Lewis and Clark to call a timeout.

Later in the second, Redlands put together a nice offensive run as Downs hit a three-pointer from sophomore guard Kim Friedman (Agoura, CA). At the other end of the court first-year forward Julia Balesteri (Pleasanton, CA) swiped a steal that she turned into points with a layup, assisted by Urbano-Sedlund for a 20-point, 37-17 lead.

After halftime, Lacey opened the third with a layup and drew the foul for a successful, and-one play. Redlands continued to build its lead on both ends of the court, snagging steals and executing play calls. Downs hit another trey at 3:59 in the third to give the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the night at 49-25.

Urbano-Sedlund owned six of Redlands' 12, fourth-quarter points to ultimately take the game, 66-46.

Downs led the team with 13 points while Jerrier added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Downs and Dack also combined for 14 rebounds. The Maroon and Gray racked up double-digit assists as Urbano-Sedlund owned four of the team's 13.

Redlands (8-3) heads to Orange County on Monday, December 31 for a 4 p.m. game against Amherst College (MA). The game will be hosted at Chapman University.
