Redlands Women's Basketball Suffers Two-Point Loss to Chapman

The University of Redlands women's basketball team rallied back from 10 points down but fell short of the victory in a 69-71 decision to regional rival Chapman University in Orange on Wednesday. Despite racking up 13 blocks while holding the Panthers to a 36.8% shooting display, the Bulldogs struggled with fouls on both sides of the game. Two Redlands players fouled out of the game, helping Chapman to 27 opportunities at the charity stripe, while the Bulldogs shot only 55.6% from the line during their 18 chances.

After trailing by 10 late in the first half, the Bulldogs mustered an impressive comeback on an 11-0 run to take a one-point lead with 13:42 remaining in the game. Freshman guard Kaity Lykins (Simi Valley, CA) scored two of her team-high 16 points, which came on 7-for-11 shooting, to put Redlands ahead.

The game remained close through the final whistle with the Panthers nabbing the largest lead at 55-50 with 10 minutes to go.

Redlands rallied back, tying it up at 62 and again at 65, when junior guard Ashley Sevilla (San Diego, CA) nailed consecutive three-pointers. She finished with 14 points, including a quartet of long balls.

With the score tied at 69, Chapman's senior center Brandi Hood offered the go-ahead bucket with 31 seconds left on the clock.

A seemingly costly turnover and foul by the Bulldogs sent Chapman to the line, but to no avail, giving Redlands new life. Sophomore forward Brittany Oster (Agoura Hills, CA) grabbed the defensive board on the second miss with 23 seconds to go, setting up a possible game-tying play.

After Head Coach Rich Murphy talked it over in a timeout, the Bulldogs had two looks to tie it up but neither one fell, resulting in the narrow loss.

Overall, Redlands shot 49.1% on the night, highlighted by a 53.8% performance from the field in the second stanza.

Senior forward Courtney Carroll (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) supplied a well-rounded stat line with 11 points, eight rebounds, five blocks and three assists. Oster offered a team-leading nine rebounds on the night, to go along with five points, four blocks and three assists.

Chapman's Andrea Villanueva came on strong in the final minutes to put up a game-high 20 points, highlighted by a 3-for-3 performance from beyond the arc. Including the winning bucket, Hood contributed 12 points and nine rebounds for the Panthers (4-3).

Redlands (2-4) returns home to Currier Gym on Saturday for a non-conference bout with La Sierra University at 7 p.m.
