The University of Redlands women’s basketball team rode an
eight-point halftime lead to earn a solid 63-48 victory over
visiting Lakeland College (WI) in tonight’s non-conference
showdown in Currier Gym.
A back-and-forth battle ensued in the opening 14 minutes, resulting
in a knotted score at 20. However, the Bulldogs enjoyed an 8-2 run
to finish out the half with a 28-22 advantage.
During the second half, Redlands never looked back, stretching the
lead to 12 with just over 10 minutes to play.
Sophomore forward Courtney Carroll (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) led
the charge with her game-high 25 points. By pulling down 13
rebounds, she also notched her sixth double-double in nine
games.
Senior guard Ali Bueno (San Jose, CA) supplied 14 points, hitting
nine of them off of three-pointers in the opening five minutes of
the game.
In addition, junior guard Mariah Barbetti-Cort (Ventura, CA)
provided seven boards and four assists for the Bulldogs.
Lakeland gained 15 points from junior guard Mary Dennewitz
(Chicago, IL) while senior forward KC Blahnik (Gladstone, MI)
chipped in 14 as the only other double-digit scorer.
Overall, the Maroon and Gray simply shot better, hitting 46.0% of
their shots, compared to the Muskies’ mark of 34.4%. The
Bulldogs also took care of the ball at the line, going
11-for-14.
Lakeland capitalized on 19 points off of turnovers.
The Muskies (9-2) began their California trip as an undefeated team
but are now heading home with losses at the hands of the Bulldogs
and the Occidental College Tigers.
Redlands (7-2) hosts No. 1 Illinois Wesleyan University on Wed.,
Dec. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in a non-conference tilt in Currier Gym.
