Bulldog Women's Basketball Wins at Chapman, 78-59

The University of Redlands women’s basketball team defeated Chapman University on the road for the first time since Jan. 7, 2003, with a solid 78-59 victory on Saturday evening. The Bulldogs had lost at the Hutton Sports Center four consecutive times but finally handed the Panthers a loss on their own court.

In Saturday’s showdown, the teams battled it out in a tight first half, with the Maroon and Gray gaining a slight four-point edge at 35-31.

The Panthers pulled within two with 16:37 to go in the second half, but then the Bulldogs erupted with a 20-2 run, which was primarily led by senior forward Meghan Yetman (Danville, CA) with 15 of those points. This offensive explosion resulted in a 58-38 lead with less than eight minutes to play.

Redlands held Chapman to a measly 22% from the field, as the Panthers hit just nine shots in the second half. The Bulldogs also took advantage of opportunity by making 25 of their 37 free throws. Overall, they dominated the boards with a 53-29 advantage.

Yetman led Redlands’ second-half charge and scored 20 of her 24 total points in the final period. In addition, she chipped in six rebounds, three assists, and one steal in the game.

Sophomore forward Courtney Carroll (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) contributed a game-high 25 points and 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double in seven games this season.

Junior guard Casey Gomez (Irvine, CA) and sophomore guard Mary Petrie (Redmond, WA) led Chapman (2-6) with 14 points apiece. Senior guard Linda Ly (San Gabriel, CA) added 10 points and four steals for the Panthers.

The Bulldogs (5-2) head to La Sierra University on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. non-conference game against the Golden Eagles.
