After a last-second win on Tuesday, the University of Redlands
women’s basketball team came up short in the final minutes of
today’s game against San Diego Christian College, resulting
in a 61-66 loss.
Down by one with 7:20 to go in the first half, the Bulldogs enjoyed
a 10-0 run to create the biggest lead of the game at 25-16.
However, the Hawks cut that lead to two with 1:56 remaining.
Redlands responded with back-to-back free throws by junior guard
Mariah Barbetti-Cort (Ventura, CA) to make it a four-point game in
the waning seconds of the opening period.
The second half saw the lead bounce from one team to another,
eventually resulting in a tie at 59 with less than three minutes to
go.
Following a Hawk free throw, senior guard Meghan Yetman (Danville,
CA) answered with a lay-up to give Redlands a one-point lead.
But San Diego Christian replied with a three-pointer by junior
guard Arlene Kaleopa, which proved to be the game-changer. Missed
opportunities plagued the Bulldogs in the final 1:53 as the Hawks
went on to win it, 66-61.
Barbetti-Cort led all scorers with 24 points to go along with seven
rebounds and five assists. Yetman chipped in 13 points and two
assists, while sophomore forward Courtney Carroll (Rancho Palos
Verdes, CA) added a double-double with 10 points and 13 boards.
The Hawks (2-3) gained double-digit scoring from sophomore guard
Camille Cooper and Kaleopa with 15 each, and senior forward Thalia
Benjamin with 11.
The Bulldogs (2-2) enjoy a short break for the holiday before
taking to the road for four consecutive games. They next travel to
the UC Santa Cruz Invite to face Whitworth University on Dec. 4 and
Santa Cruz on Dec. 5.
