
The University of Redlands women’s basketball team
throttled the visiting Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges
in tonight’s Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
conference (SCIAC) game in Currier Gym by a resounding score of
81-48. The Bulldogs ran off with a 12-0 lead to start to the game
and then cruised to the victory with 11 different players seeing
time on the floor.
Sophomore Courtney Carroll (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) contributed
eight of the team’s first 11 points, knocking down two
three-pointers and a jumper in the opening four minutes.
With impressive shooting from all areas of the floor, Redlands
quickly owned a 30-point lead with less than nine minutes to go in
the first half.
From here, the Bulldogs went on cruise control, taking care of the
ball and hitting their shots en route to the dominating
victory.
Carroll paced the Maroon and Gray with 24 points on 9-for-13
shooting, to go along with seven rebounds, three assists, and three
blocks. Senior forward Meghan Yetman (Danville, CA) was within
reach of a triple-double with 12 points, nine rebounds and eight
assists. Junior guard Mariah Barbetti-Cort (Ventura, CA) also
provided a well-rounded effort with 10 points, nine rebounds and
six assists.
Senior guard Camille Sheffield (Gambier, OH) posted 11 points off
the bench for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Overall, Redlands shot 45.8% from the field, compared to the
Athenas’ showing of 32.1%. The Bulldogs also knocked down
36.8% of their attempts from long range, while CMS struggled from
beyond the arc with an 8.3% performance. The Maroon and Gray went
80.0% from the line as the Athenas connected on 76.5% of their
shots.
The Bulldogs controlled the boards with a 43-to-28 margin,
including seven more on the offensive end.
With the win, Redlands (15-5, 7-2 SCIAC) remains in third place in
the conference standings, sitting behind a two-way tie for first
place. The women’s basketball team looks forward to hosting
Caltech on Saturday as part of a SCIAC doubleheader with the
men’s team. Tip off is slated for 5 p.m. in Currier Gym.
