The University of Redlands women’s basketball team
captured its second Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SCIAC) win of the 2010 season with a solid 61-48
victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Claremont on
Saturday evening. The Bulldogs held an 11-point lead at the half
and never looked back, resulting in an important victory to move to
2-0 on the early conference season.
The Maroon and Gray jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening minutes
with senior forward Meghan Yetman (Danville, CA) hitting
back-to-back shots. CMS cut it to one just a few minutes later and
then pulled within two at the 10-minute mark. But the Bulldogs
pushed their advantage to 13 points when senior guard Ali Bueno
(San Jose, CA) knocked down a three-pointer with 5:13
remaining. Redlands continued to hold a double-digit lead through
the final minutes of the half.
The second half saw much of the same as Redlands gained a 17-point
advantage with 11:53 left to play in the game and staved off the
Athenas’ final efforts in the waning minutes.
Once again, sophomore forward Courtney Carroll (Rancho Palos
Verdes, CA) posted impressive numbers to lead the Bulldogs, earning
20 points on 7-for-19 shooting. She currently ranks second among
the conference players in scoring with an average of 17.9 points,
but in the last two SCIAC games she has racked up an outstanding
25.5 points per game.
The Bulldogs shot 32.1% from the field and 30.8% from beyond the
arc, while Claremont came in at 32.7% and 25.0%, respectively. The
difference-maker came at the free-throw line where Redlands knocked
down 23 of its 31 opportunities for a mark of 74.2%, compared to
CMS’ 59.1% performance of 13-for-22. In addition, the Maroon
and Gray converted 17 points off CMS turnovers and tallied seven
fewer turnovers than the Athenas.
The Redlands bench supplied 22 points in the victory with sophomore
guard Katy Coyne (Scottsdale, AZ) chipping in 11 points.
The Bulldogs (9-3, 2-0 SCIAC) face off against non-conference foe
Chapman University on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Currier Gym.
