Five Bulldogs named USTFCCCA All-Region for Indoor Track & field

USTFCCCA All-Region Awards

REDLANDS, Calif. - All-Region honorees for the 2022 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field season were announced on Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The top-5 individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region distinction, in addition to each member of the region's top-3 relay teams. The regions used for this award – East, Great Lakes, Metro, Mid-Atlantic, Mideast, Midwest, Niagara, North, South, and West – match those used during the cross-country season.

The University of Redlands had five athletes recognized as All-West Region, the most since 2018 when the teams combined for 18.  On the men's side Tucker Cargile (Denver, CO) led the way being recognized for the fourth time in his career earning recognition in two events, the 800m and the Mile.  Earlier in the season he won the 800m Event at the Ron Mann Classic with a time of 1:55.19.  In that same meet he also competed in the Mile clocking in at a time of 4:06, placing him 3rd overall qualifying him for the NCAA Division III Track & Field Indoor National Championships.  He comes into the Championships ranked No. 2 in the Mile with a time of 4:07.60 and currently owns the 11th fastest mile time in NCAA Division III history. 

Owen Schmitz (Fremont, CA) was another honoree on the men's side earning recognition for the first time in his career in the Triple Jump after putting up a 13.61m mark during the NAU Tune-Up.

On the women's side, three separate athletes were recognized, all three receiving accolades for the first time in their careers.  Junior Alexandra Ackerman (Lake Elsinore, CA) was selected in the 60 Meter Dash finishing 9th at the NAU Tune-Up with a time of 7.83.  Junior Ciara Aw (Seattle, WA) was also on the list in the Long Jump recording a 5.27m mark at the NAU Tune-Up, which placed her 3rd overall.  Then Andrea Lyon (Danville, CA) was the last Bulldog to be recognized posting a 57.29 in the 400m during the Ron Mann Classic, which qualified her for the NCAA Division III Track & Field Indoor Championships.  She comes into the Championships with the sixth fastest time in Division III.               

A total of seven programs had 25 or more All-Region honors: SUNY Geneseo's women with 38, Johns Hopkins' women with 37, MIT's men with 32, Carnegie Mellon's men with 28, SUNY Geneseo's men with 28, UW-Oshkosh's men with 27 and Williams' women with 27.

All told, SUNY Geneseo led the overall combined count with 66, which was 13 more than Johns Hopkins with 53. MIT was the only other program with more than 50, while Williams (48), Carnegie Mellon (46), Mount Union (45) and Emory (43) each hauled in more than 40.
