Senior Emily Canales Takes Second in 3000m Steeplechase with School-Record Effort

Senior Emily Canales (Redlands, CA) capped of her stellar senior season with a second-place performance in the 3000m Steeplechase during the 2012 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at nearby Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.  The talented runner unleashed another school-record time en route to a career-best mark of 10:36.62.

After recording the fifth-fastest time of Thursday's preliminaries, Canales took the collegiate track for the final time with hopes of gaining All-America status with a top-eight finish.

However, she more than exceeded that expectation by earning a spot towards the top of the podium due to an outstanding kick on the last half lap.  She clocked her final 400 meters in 1:23.957, which was the fastest of the race.

Behind Keri Lambert of Amherst College (MA) and Jena Peacock of Rowan University (NJ), Canales jockeyed for position with a pack of four competitors throughout most of the race.  She pulled ahead of the group and ultimately caught Peacock down the home stretch, securing the silver and All-America accolades in impressive fashion.

All three of the top women ran faster than the stadium record of 10:37.60.  Lambert won the event with a strong showing of 10:27.32 and Peacock took third in 10:37.20.

Redlands' only other qualifier, freshman Maddie Smith (Hoquiam, WA), gained national experience in the High Jump by clearing a height of 5'1" in her championship debut.
