Bulldog Track & Field Relishes Home Meet with Strong Performances

The University of Redlands track & field program hosted the annual Redlands Invitational on Friday at Ashel Cunningham Track, as various schools and individuals put on a solid display of talent and speed.  For the Maroon and Gray, the women notched five event-wins and the men came in first on eight occasions.

Senior Emily Canales (Redlands, CA) unleashed a first-place time of 2:20.49 in her debut of the 800m Run, while freshman Amy Pumputis (Redmond, WA) edged out the competition in the 400m Hurdles with her fastest time of the season at 1:10.49.  Junior Vainayaki Sivaji (North Hollywood, CA) also recorded a personal-best mark, winning the 200m Dash in 25.48.

Freshmen Alexandra Blalock (Indian Wells, CA) and Maddie Smith (Hoquiam, WA) headlined the field events for the Maroon and Gray, as they provided a one-two punch in the High Jump.  Blalock finished at the top of the podium by clearing 5'1" and Smith followed closely behind with her height of 4'11".

The meet finished on a high note for the Bulldog women as their 4x400m Relay made up some serious ground in the final lap, posting a first-place time of 4:02.06.

For the men, the Bulldogs provided a well-rounded effort that included different event-winners at all eight of their triumphs.

Freshman Chris Bolt (Reno, NV) led off Redlands' effort with a stunning time of 4:15.04 in the 1500m Run, while freshman Taylor Browning (Carbondale, CO) impressed with his triumphant time of 22.12 in the 200m Dash.

The Bulldogs boasted the top-two finishers in the 800m Run and the 400m Hurdles.  Senior Duncan Ashby (Goleta, CA) uncorked a winning time of 1:57.09 in the half mile, with junior teammate Tom Marshall (Hillsboro, OR) closely following in second place (1:58.04).  Senior Cameron Clark (Bellevue, WA) and sophomore Darron Usher (Yucaipa, CA) provided a lethal combination in the longer hurdle race, with Clark crossing the finish line with a first-place time of 56.04 and Usher holding on for second (56.95). 

The men's 4x400m Relay dominated the field, winning the event with a time of 3:22.88, which was more than three seconds ahead of the runners-up.

 In the field events, Usher and sophomore Ellis Hazard (Seattle, WA) tied for the top prize in the High Jump, both clearing a height of 6'0".  In addition, junior Bryan Artmann (Henderson, NV) remained steady in the Pole Vault by registering a mark of 15'11" for first place.   Finally, sophomore Jorge Cervantes (Indio, CA)  and senior Ricardo Anzar (Colima, MEX) teamed up in the Discus Throw, with Cervantes winning with a heave of 143'1" and Anzar taking second (136'10").

Redlands heads to Occidental College for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Quad Meet No. 2 on Saturday, March 24, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
