Three Women's Track & Field Standouts Earn Capital One® Academic All-District Honors

It was announced early Thursday that three members of the University of Redlands women's track & field team garnered a spot on the Capital One® College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Second Team for their academic and athletic accomplishments. Seniors Kelsey Bermudez (La Verne, CA), Mackenzie Smith (Hoquiam, WA) and Kortney Watring (Riverside, CA) collected this distinction after a tremendous final campaign that included national appearances for each student-athlete.

Bermudez finishes out her career with her second Academic All-District honor of her career. As the top pole-vaulter in Redlands school history, she reset her own program standard on more than one occasion during the 2011 campaign. She advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time and recorded a ninth-place finish with a height of 11' 7.25" for her 10th mark over 11 feet during the season.

During her illustrious career, Bermudez captured the 2010 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Pole Vault title while also collecting various All-Conference awards for top-six finishes.

This four-time Redlands Scholar-Athlete also landed on the Dean's List each year of her career, revealing her academic talent and determination. Bermudez recently graduated with a 3.81 cumulative GPA as a Liberal Studies and History double-major.

Smith collects her second Academic All-District award with this year's selection. Just last week, she became the first four-time All-American in the same event in Redlands track & field history after finishing eighth at the NCAA Championships in the Javelin with a toss of 132' 11". In addition, she has owned the conference title in this event during her tenure while earning All-SCIAC honors in the High Jump on three occasions. She currently sits third all-time at Redlands for her career-best marks in the Javelin and High Jump.

Beyond her success with the track & field program, Smith ranks first in Redlands history with 108 career blocks as a member of the Bulldog women's basketball team. She also played an integral role in the team's inaugural NCAA appearance during the 2010 campaign.

Most recently, this four-time UR Scholar-Athlete was named the Frank Serrao Senior Female Student-Athlete of the Year at Redlands and was nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year. Smith boasts a cumulative GPA of 3.74 as a Mathematics major that has landed on the Dean's List seven times in her four-year career.

Finally, Watring gains her third Academic All-District accolade while closing out an illustrious career as an accomplished jumper for the Bulldogs. This season, she advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time and recorded a 10th-place showing in the Triple Jump with a leap of 37' 5". She landed less than three inches short of gaining All-America honors.

In addition, this team's Newcomer of the Year from 2008 collected multiple All-SCIAC awards in her career, finishing among the top-five in the jumps each year of her tenure.

With a 3.93 cumulative GPA as an English Literature major, this four-time UR Scholar-Athlete also boasts the honor of being the recipient of the Irene Smith and Town & Gown scholarships. Watring also owns the distinction of being on the Dean's List every semester of her undergraduate career at Redlands.

Overall, this trio of women consistently contributed to the team's success throughout the past four years, culminating in conference championships in 2008, 2010, and 2011.
